lsd was synthesized by the United States Government trying to create a mind control substance, the guy who made it said it "fucking rocked" and spent the rest of his life campaigning everyone to partake it. then hippies came along and it was illegalized

I thought it was synthesized by a Swiss chemist working for the pharmaceutical company Sandoz?

I know that they experimented with the drug like they have with many substances. I don't really know why that matters though

never mind n_u

still pretty confusing though

I'd recommend trying to find some resources online to kind of explain the whole idea of attack and decay and the other parameters on there if you're unfamiliar.

But the best way is to play around with it until you stumble on what you're looking for.

For example, you can get some percussive sounds if you set the oscillator to "noise".
Then, have a fast attack (all the way or almost all the way to the left side of the slider).
Have a short decay on there too.
Sustain and release are going to dictate how long the sound will play or fade essentially, so a shorter release is going to sound choppier (kick/snare) while a longer one will have that kind of cool trail you can use to simulate hi-hats or something.
You can save presents on there too.

I don't use garage band as much anymore, but I think there's a piano roll on there (I think?) so you can do some more precise sequencing if you want. Otherwise, like I said (but didn't link to) akai makes a really nice laptop midi keyboard.

You can usually get one for less than $50 on ebay.

Otherwise, you could look at korg's offering.

People bitch about the keys falling out, but they haven't fallen out of mine. It does feel a lot like typing on a keyboard, so it's not expressive or anything. But there's a pitch and mod button on there too.

Have fun!!!!

PCP
Funny you should mention this.  My dad was just talking about his past experience with PCP tonight at dinner.  Sounds kind of intense.

I'm doing everything that I want to be doing right now, so I'm not sure.  I guess being proficient at an instrument might be nice, but I hate practicing.

Wow, cool dad... again, I wouldn't advocate anyone ever try PCP, it's popularly associated with bouts of intense violence, screaming, and total nightmarish dissociation.  n_u

yeah i definitely need a midi keyboard if i'm gonna be doing this a lot, because using in-app typing keyboards (as in, using the computer keyboard as a musical keyboard) can get confusing really fast. hard to keep track of keys sometimes.

i am actually using famitracker right now, i decided to try it out and i'm actually getting somewhere with it. i'm pretty much doing a complete note-for-note reproduction of Kraid's theme from the NES Metroid in order to grasp the basics of famitracker. it's going pretty smoothly.
