well I am poor, but I'm still a little skeptical about tipping a barber.

I mean, you don't tip your plumber, or your electrician. You don't tip the mechanic fixing your car. You don't tip the guy what painted your house, or the gardener. Why would you tip the barber?

I used to paint houses and on two instances I was actually given a handsome tip.
They were big houses.

You can absolutely tip them all. In most cases the prior agreed to contract includes enough cushion for everyone to receive their cut. And also long established standard practice for each profession and their rules of conduct and ethics predetermine the distinct process and nature of their payment. But only a few would turn down a crispy, and usually it has nothing to do with official rules. Plus the barber is less a stranger and more a friend, whom you see repeatedly and might even get to know too, and whom you entrust to cut your hair goddamn it.

well I might, I try to tip my fuckin pot dealer lol. I tip barbers because they probably get shit wages and if it's no problem for me why not give it to them. I try to always tip pizza/chinese delivery people extra a lot because one time this old guy delivered from Jin Jiang, I tipped him $5 on the receipt but he gave me this incredibly dirty look with his hands up as if he were saying 'what the FUCK man' I was bewildered and felt really bad but I have no idea what I did

Delivery drivers I can understand, as they're taking food to you. I don't think their wages are too bad. I'm almost certain the tips are a way of offsetting the cost of renting a chair at a shop.

I don't think of it in such terms. It is simply my own personal evaluation of merit and worth for both the job performed and the person who performed it. If that happens to be higher than what most would estimate, so be it. I am completely comfortable and act in accordance with good conscience when I make my decisions and hand off my money. It is a good feeling. I know dollars can never buy me morals or impart appreciation precisely, but in this world, it says a lot, and goes a long way too.

definitely all industries where tips are expected have tips built into costs and salaries. that's why I have no problem paying a little extra, I mean they're spending their time to cut my hair or do other menial shit, least I can do is help them get ahead a little more than expected

I work selling a service where people are very concerned about the rates down the the cent, and by far my least favorite clients to deal with are the ones who keep me up at odd hours to credit $1.36 back to their account for some stupid reason, which they do not because they really need the money, but because they're assholes who don't understand the way an exchange for a service (opposed to product) works, i.e. you get what you give in terms of attitude... so I try to tip whatever seems right plus a little bit, to remind myself that the value is not in the money

I usually leave $20 unless they really went out of their way to do nothing that I told them. I tip because if I have the same barber next time I would like him to have a reason to do a similarly good job
