i understand valve's reasoning.  people want something that just 'werks'

though, i think using linux is counterproductive to that goal but heyho

valve fanboys don't use linux but they think it is really kewl so i guess it makes sense

i still don't understand who their target market for these things is

gamers who want something that just 'werks' have been buying consoles for decades, and there isn't a price or content advantage compared to custom built windows pcs either lol

there's only like ten games on steam that are even linux compatible

That's why I think it's hilarious when people were thinking that this was going to make gaming on Linux big. I don't see the vast majority of AAA games ever going to Linux in our lifetime (unless Windows goes down) And then all the old games will never get ported to Linux either.

srsly

and even if we do end up eventually seeing more linux ports, that's not going to really sell hardware when it's also readily available on windows too lol

let me know when an elder scrolls or half life games goes linux exclusive, only then might the gabecube be truly relevant
then again with linux being freely available on any platform that can handle it, even linux-exclusive games won't be enough to make the steam machine itself a worthwhile investment
I'm pretty sure you've always been able to play steam games on Tv's for a long time now.

it's called HDMI out

yeah, but frequently moving one's massive gaming pc tower to the living room and vice versa is inconvenient, esp. when pc gamers tend to prefer kb/mouse controls which additionally requires a desk or at least a small table in addition to a place to sit

still, it's not nearly a $450 inconvenience, especially with the abundance of relatively inexpensive streaming devices currently on the market that make it quite possible to enjoy pc games on any hdtv in the house
not to mention many pc gamers probably have large monitors in their bedrooms anyway, my tv is directly behind my computer setup and i literally just have to turn around if i want to play on a bigger screen lol
