Is it really that advantageous to keep up a 320kbps library?
Most times when people talk about obsessing over lossless formats and how good their experience is, I just kind of roll my eyes and shrug it off.
Space is starting to become an issue, so I was thinking of just converting everything down to 128kbps anyway.
if lowering the bitrate doesn't harm your enjoyment of your music, go for it. i'm sure some here will disagree, but that's just them. goodjob;
lol music
i don't see why not if you personally can't hear the difference (and most can't), it's not for anyone's enjoyment but your own
don't let the elitists shame you into thinking you're having a worse experience wry
don't listen to those fags 128 is definitely noticeably different from 320 :|
i've had some good speakers that have been able to help low bitrate sound better but if you're using an ipod with regular headphones/earbuds which i do and i think you are then you will hear the difference
256 is okay though
128 is a noticeable step down from 320 for sure, although it's easier to notice with some types of music than with others of course. i listen to a lot of noisy layered stuff so lowering that to 128 would be a crime for me personally
personally, to save a small amount of space, i generally opt for v0 (variable bitrate) instead of 320 for some albums. it's effectively taking a 320kbps rip and putting saran wrap on it to get rid of the blank spots where it doesn't actually peak at 320. it saves as much as 20mb an album sometimes.
however, even with all that going on, i still am pressed for space so i'm in the middle of just moving everything over to an external drive anyway

Yeah, I'm going to need to pick up an external hd one of these days. Real soon. Probably today.
How does that work, exactly, with syncing to itunes then?
So, I pump everything onto the external drive and itunes is able to detect everything when it's plugged in?

yeah. by default (at least on os x), itunes makes its own copies of files and keeps them in the default os x "music" folder, but you can change that so that it simply reads from where ever you want it to
i second v0.
if i'm in my car or using earbuds, i can't tell the difference, but with my headphones it's pretty noticable. i figure that it's good to have a higher bitrate for if/when i get nicer speakers and stuff too.
only if you have an absurdly priced listening device
i use v0 and can't tell the difference from .flac or 320kpbs
i can if i use my friend's headphones though
but with flac

my sennheisers were around $150 and i can definitely notice a difference

Yeah, I'm going to pick one up tomorrow I reckon.
150 bucks for headphones is kind of absurd. I mean yeah, if you're into that then you'd get some expensive headphones like that, but still...
i got 60 dollar sony headp hones that i use for recording and they are really good for listening 2.

You'd be surprised how much different listening can be through some quality cans.
V0 is pretty good. Also, Hydrogenaudio (http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=LAME#Maximum_quality_and_archiving) says that 320 and V0 are practically identical.

it's actually a pretty standard price for high-quality headphones
But it's still an absurd price to pay for headphones. Unless you have a job that requires it, then yeah.
There's not really anything wrong with buying them and a lot of them probably do sound better, but still...
not really lol
expensive yes, absurd no
For a pair of headphones, yes, absurd

hd595
really should have gotten the 555's though, since you can do that mod to make them just like the 595s
oh well

Yeah, I haven't tried doing that mod at all. Isn't it just pulling a piece of material off the inside or something?

Putting down $200 for beats or something is absurd; paying for a label.
You can get a good pair of grados for around $60 online. $100-$150 will get you a fantastic experience. It's like hearing things again for the first time.

it isn't that absurd when you consider how much use that you get out of it. you literally get years of work out of 60-150 dollars. that is better than Most THings ten times that price!!!!!!!!!!! also we arent talking about earbuds i hope U know.

Yeah, I have a pair. They're really comfortable.
Kind of nervous about opening them up though.

yeah my 595s are pretty comfy too. i'd only really used earbuds prior to them though
i don't blame you but i say go for it. i hear that the difference is pretty considerable

It's still absurd. Yes, you pay more for higher quality and better sounding stuff, but they're still just headphones. That you're paying $150 for.

Well actually you could say that too. But it'd probably be more prudent to take things on a case by case basis.
Jean, grab me my headphones.
Billy, pop those earbuds in quick-like, ya hear now?
why doesn't anyone use aac, the superior lossy codec

i don't think so. it depends on what you want to get out of your music. if you enjoy hearing everything that your music has to offer, then it is reasonable.
just like a cyclist who spends a lot on a nice bike because they like bikes a lot
shit's relative

Well of course. Different people value different things differently.
Doesn't there also exist variable bitrate that has higher quality in parts where it matters most? I don't normally pay much attention to audiophile stuff, but I've at least seen that praised as better than 320kbps by some people (including probably silverhawk)
I'm so much of a non-audiophile that I use $15 headphones sillydood;
and prefer to use speakers instead when I don't have to worry about disturbing other people
Quote from: Rain Man on February 08, 2013, 11:19:51 PM

because most people who care enough to change the format that everybody uses are apparently either:
audiophiles who probably prefer lossless FLAC to either
Apple, whose influence is almost purposefully limited to iTunes and iDevices
People in charge of non-music products like Blu-Ray video
Free Software lovers, who prefer OGG Vorbis instead (I have no idea how it compares in quality/compression to MP3/AAC) and aren't generally taken seriously by anybody who primarily uses technology for media consumption
oWn'd
I go with V0 as well.
V0/variable - everything new
lossless - things i replay or like a lot
can't beat that system
320 or die
or flac
iodownl;oad mp3s
i too am a mp3 downloader
how to download mp3s: cut out the middle man and turn yourself in
Music is Sin.
Music is Sin
Sin is Jecht
Music is Jecht???????????
lol this thread
192 is my usual sweet spot
and i have a pair of $20 sony earbuds
when i'm at home i just use my computer speakers (with subwoofer)
256-320 is what I aim for.
