Title: vidya tropes you like
Post by: ncba93ivyase on December 10, 2012, 07:50:00 PM
Seeing a boss long before you actually fight it. This doesn't apply to the main villain that you encounter every 5 minutes throughout the game, but those moments when you're going through a level and something mysterious flies past you and you encounter it again later in that area. shmups are the best with this, especially when it flies by in the background then launches into the foreground

yeah. nightmare's shadow is in a tank in a huge room behind you, flying back and forth and making huge whooshing noises. this is several rooms before you actually fight him.

and you see two dead parasite queens in prime before you actually fight one. and as far as mini-bosses and dangerous enemies go, you of course see metroids and those big giant space pirates in their tanks a good while before you ever fight one.

and the caterpillar vine thing that shoots spores in zero mission...you beat it, and then it falls down and makes a big hole. you proceed to ridley's area, and you see that it has fallen down there, but you can't access it. nor can you go anywhere, so you return to norfair and go right back to where he fell down, and you find a huge tunnel that goes down to where you saw him in ridley's area. only then, he's not there. only his empty cocoon. later, you find him again, as that huge moth thing boss.

i love when games use previous music in the game for a later part, usually a more serious part.
like the final boss in persona 3, where it uses the velvet room theme in the music.

this

also when music or events from the title screen/pre-game intro are incorporated into major events of the game

although i don't think that's as common in modern games

this particular variation is a tradition in the tales series. generally, the title or intro theme will have a slower piano version used in more "serious" moments, especially near the ends of the games. and abyss featured a boss battle near the end that was basically the most "important" battle that wasn't the final boss, and it featured an orchestrated version of the opening theme.
