Title: Video game puzzle/obstacle/mission tropes you hate
Post by: Samus Aran on December 05, 2012, 10:56:31 PM
FUCK ice sliding. I'm in the seventh gym in Pokemon White and fuck this fucking ice sliding shit. I hated it in other Pokemon games, I hated it in Tales of Symphonia, I hated it in the several Zelda games it's featured in. Ice sliding puzzles, whether it be you sliding or blocks sliding, are absolute nightmares and I can't stand them.

those missions near the end of the game where you need to evacuate some retarded, worthless character from a burning building or some other idiotic situation. it's especially bad when the ai is complete shit or they're too slow to keep up with you and get lost. and it's always near the end of a game during the peak of action

bonus points if they die immediately afterwards

"arena" scenes where you're locked in a room or area and enemies flood in endlessly for an unnecessarily long period of time and you're eventually let out because a door unlocks on its own or something. every goddamn big budget game this generation has this shit and i don't know why. the first uncharted was full of it. akudood;

you're in a war zone or completely abandoned area and you can't get past the flimsy door/fence/whatever because you need a key. other put up a convincingly durable structure to block me or just let me knock it down. it's even worse when it's a 1 foot high pile of rocks akudood; akudood; akudood; akudood; akudood;

forced sidequests where you have to gather berries for some character you'll never ever encounter ever again and they for some reason have a key to some hidden ancient super-weapon that is necessary to progress but becomes completely worthless and underpowered in an hour

this sort of situation was the one bad part of MGS3. it was awful. such an amazing game, so why'd they include that shitty part where you have to try to sneak around with a wounded EVA? it's impossible.

and mgs2 had a shitty escort section but at least it wasn't too bad

and catherine had a puzzle where you had to have your girlfriend follow you up the blocks and i just gave up because i knew it was going to be dumb

Also, I hate sections with time-sensitive events that make you restart 5-10 minutes of progress. It's usually something dumb like "KILL ALL THE ENEMIES BUT DON'T SHOOT THE RED ONE", or you have to carry something from point A to point B with 20938420948209 things trying to trip you. monster hunter has a bunch of the latter goonish

Missions that the game forces you to complete successfully even though success and failure yield the same result.

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is the part of Uncharted 2 with Jeff (that fucking bitch), even though that one didn't really bother me so much.

those damn stupid slider puzzles, u know, where you slide tiles to make a picture.
it was in RE4, and most recently uncharted golden abyss.
its in other games, cuz ive done them more than twice, but i cant think of them off the top of
my head.

oh... and timed escapes, where if you are just a hair too late, you die.
most recent was near the end of RE6 in Chris' campaign.
also in Uncharted GA.

When you have to backtrack like all the way through the level or just run around everywhere looking for obscure shit to unlock a wall or door or bookcase or whatever.
Fucking Resident Evil.

ice sliding puzzles are the worst, imo.

also block sliding "puzzles" are just annoying. they're overdone and you just want to get them over with so you don't bother putting thought into them

ehh...the first time you play it, yes. you can get most of those keys early if you know where they are, though.

prime 2 is considerably worse about this. i really don't mind it in the first game at all because they're really easy and fast to get, but in prime 2 that's not the case.

theres one thing that god of war does that bugs me.
you come to a door thats locked or sumthin, so you go the other way to find a key, and you end up playing like 2 hrs of the game doing what your supposed to, when suddenly you get a key, and your like, "oh yeah..... there was a locked door."

basically, you just spent 2 hrs to essentially go thru one door.
