Title: hardsubs and video conversion
Post by: bluaki on June 12, 2012, 01:45:36 AM
So I recently learned how to make hardsubs along with some other video encoding tricks giggle;

I can convert and distribute whatever you guys need and can't find already converted elsewhere. Preferably videos I already have downloaded.

For file format:
I'll convert any Hi10P to HiP because I assume any video player that can't render .ass subtitles also can't handle Hi10P, but I'd rather not convert much 10-bit video just because you don't want to get an updated VLC/MPlayer/Media Player Classic
PS3, 360, smartphones, and probably most other recent devices use .mp4 (not mkv) with x264/aac
.avi with xvid/mp3 is worse yet strangely popular; I assume this means some ancient devices prefer it

For video size:
Source size, usually 720p (1280x720), is of course best for anything that can display it. I can also resize to something like 480p (848x480) or 400p (704x400, the usual size for recent anime hardsubs)

xvids are worse encodes than mp4s? never knew that, but oh well. xvids are what typically get used for my xbox/ps3-capable encodes befuddlement

anyway, i don't really remember what you have and which ones i wanted to see sometime soon, but if you do have one i wanna see soon, it'd definitely be cool if you could encode them for me

the kenshin mp4s you've made for me have been a big help  hocuspocus;

Despite its name, ASS (Advanced SubStation) is pretty much the best subtitle format ever made.

I apparently never downloaded Madoka's BD version, so I guess I'll get that first before converting anything

MP4 videos' main limitation compared to MKV is that they can't have (decent) softsubs embedded in the file, but the video and audio codecs used in an xbox/ps3-capable MP4 are actually exactly the same as typical MKVs ("typical" being non-10bit and without the lossless flac audio many BD rips have) and just wrapped in a different container.

Xvid, by contrast, is a much older encoding system which I believe almost always has worse filesize:quality ratio than H.264 and is particularly worse with HD

Nearly everything I watch stays saved and I also have a few things I haven't watched yet

The encoding methods I recently learned about are significantly different than what I used for those Kenshin videos. It seems to have better quality control and can make more professional-ish videos. It's pretty much a change from using one video editing utility to separate programs for decoding and encoding each container, video, and audio format.

What do you plan on playing the videos with? A 360?

I just started a script which is converting every episode in the series with no further interaction from me. It'll probably finish within a day. bassir;

either 360 or ps3.... either will be fine. Kaz wants to know which subber it is (i think he wants to know if its victorique).
I dont mind who it is. So you already started converting Gosick? Wow.... mindreader....
Thanks alot for this btw.

360 and PS3 use the same format and it's the one I chose to use.

Yes, it's Victorique (720p BD source), which I believe is an alternate name UTW used for releasing Gosick.

I haven't actually checked that these encodes don't have any errors, but they probably should be fine.

When it's done converting, I'll upload Gosick at http://bluaki.dyndns.org/Gosick/

As of this post there's one episode uploaded. Feel free to try it and tell me if there's serious problems like desynced audio, skips, parts with a bad quality picture, etc. The other videos for this series will all be about the same file size, which will total about 4.7GB for all 24 episodes.

I even made the script put the filenames in that fancy typical format giggle;

Gosick is all uploaded and Haibane is converting now to http://bluaki.dyndns.org/Haibane/

I thought before that Coalgirls was the only group that released a Madoka blu-ray batch, but when downloading the series I saw one by WhyNot too. I decided to get both and compare them before converting. I think that WhyNot is quite a bit better; the wording in general both flows better and is more natural while Coalgirls tends to use excessively literal and direct translations to a point that often makes less sense.

Though my conversion will take this difference away, Coalgirls is also almost twice the filesize of WhyNot even though the perceived image quality, to me, seems better (with sharper lines) in the WhyNot videos. I'll try out a few combinations of settings for converting this without ruining that quality nor producing an excessively large video.

WhyNot has turned out to be a subber I've really trusted. They're still very new, but they've been consistently great so far. They do encode to pretty large file sizes usually, but it's worth it if you ask me. Their BRS was a lot better than Commie's and I also like their Apollon a bit more.

Anyway, good to hear Blu. wrench;

I forget why, but I actually chose Commie for BRS and Apollon even though I usually prefer WhyNot.

Their filesizes seem about the same as most other recent groups: average ~300MB for single 720p TV episodes among the series I've downloaded from them. This Madoka batch is the only BD release I have from them and it's more like 400MB average, which is nowhere near Coalgirls's 700MB average Madoka episode size.

Their Apollon episode file sizes have exceeded like 500mb, that's pretty much why I mentioned large file sizes. But their BRS episodes were pretty typical file sizes, yeah.

They're both Menclave, with memories as avi and melodies as 480p MKV.

I apparently have both of those saved alongside a 1080p release with the same subtitles for some reason, though I don't know how to convert releases that use ordered chapters (OP/ED being saved as a separate video file instead of included in each episode)

It doesn't look like the AVI release I got is still available, so it's now uploading to: http://bluaki.dyndns.org/ef/
I'll convert melodies later.

By the way, did John download all of both Gosick and Haibane?

Maybe I should have read the comments (http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=torrentinfo&tid=274473) on the page I got this batch from. My conversion simply copied WhyNot's audio.

I'll download episode 4 from some other batch and sync its audio to my video.

HEY BLU

would you be willing to do Toradora xvid or mp4 for me??? i really wanna watch it and i'm pretty much out of things to watch on my tv, all i have left is stuff for computer watching, so i'd really like some xvid/mp4s of this particular series

Apparently the batch of toradora I have saved right now is only 480p (still CoalGirls/mkv)

Would you prefer 720p? It might take longer because of redownloading

http://bluaki.usr.sh/anime/Toradora/

Converting anime with ordered chapters (separated OP/ED into separate files) was... interesting. I'd rather not go through that trouble again; pasting together the audio from separate files takes quite a bit of extra scripting, especially when the episodes are inconsistent about when the songs start and a few episodes omit the ED.

also the process was rather error-prone, especially with audio timing, so a few episodes might have problems idk
Title: Re: hardsubs and video conversion
Post by: bluaki on May 19, 2013, 08:15:14 PM
and it looks like there already is an obvious problem with those files: episodes 1 and 2 were twice as large as they should be because the tracks were added twice or something like that

so I just reuploaded those two n_u
