Title: making my own "music"
Post by: Hiro on November 03, 2011, 12:47:16 AM
yeah, I suppose you could call it that. I'm just dicking around in audacity, sampling different things and trying out different techniques and whatnot. Here's a song I just made tonight, let me know what you think:

http://soundcloud.com/v-o-l-t/crash

I made two other pieces over the summer, you can check them out too:
#2: http://soundcloud.com/v-o-l-t/grandpas-house
#1: http://soundcloud.com/v-o-l-t/dead-10

Anyone else make their own shit?

it is not bad. I think when the third layer comes in it gets chaotic and off the beat, you should find a better riddim there. also I hear that son et lumiere at the beginning  wariodood;

I made these like 2 summers ago, my only efforts at recording to date. they are stunning examples of shit. (all tracks done by me at separate times)

'drink me a milkshake', improvised
[mp3]http://boyah.net/wziard/drinkmeamilkshake.mp3[/mp3]

'hooked a boot', experimental dancehall glitch stepbeat
[mp3]http://boyah.net/wziard/hookedaboot.mp3[/mp3]
also I forgot this you might be more interested in, given what you are working on. they are some 'dj mixes' I made last year. (they are each 1hr long but appreciate the fade ins/outs. amateur shit also disclaimer)

I feel like the third layer works for a few seconds, but after a while it does get a bit off. That's partially why I made the second layer fade out. But still, this was more just a practice than anything, it's more about the ideas I applied then how well the rhythms fall into place with each other.
I wonder if I lowered the volume on that background layer if it would sound a bit less chaotic befuddlement
but yeah, mars volta lol  hocuspocus;

That first track of yours... the sax is kind of crazy, I like it. You mumble too much though. Beat's kind of stuttery too. I laughed at the lyrics powerofone; Overall though, this is kind of promising.
that second track... that doesn't even count, man.

practice makes perfect.

lol yeah the second track was a joke, it was just me dropping paperclips and crunching paper. you should listen to the mixes too (once they finish uploading in ~10 mins), I think you'd enjoy them, first one at least

I think I remember you posting some mixes you made once. they're pretty long, right? if they're what I'm thinking of, they were fairly enjoyable.

I probably did. Anyway I'd recommend Ableton Live, it's great for playing around with mixing and sampling whether or not you're doing it live or with external devices.

Hey this one's almost coherent  O_0 But the samples are a bit too obvious.

I have a tiny handful of tracks that I would call "finished" (mixed and mastered properly) but I'm not really ready to share those.
I was going through a few folders in my MPC's files a few days ago, though, and I have about 120 projects started on there.
If I actually followed through with some ideas instead of leaving them to rot for a while, I might have a little more to show for my efforts.

All I really have uploaded anywhere is a few bumfucking youtube videos. They're not indicative of any of the finished or almost finished stuff. It's more like, "hey, turn on the camera while I mess around for a bit".

Also, use headphones.

That actually turned out pretty nice. Very mellow, I'm really digging it. That's a really nice setup you've got there too, I'm jealous.

Give ableton a shot. Most DAW's have like a thirty day trial which allow you to test things out, full featured.
If you're into sampling, you can pick up a cheap midi keyboard and trigger them via the keys. Or, if you really want to get into things, you could grab an MPD and bounce around on some pads.

boognish that video is great! I like what you're doing.

I have a a sampler and a drum machine and I have been trying to get stuff together but I just need to organize things in a way of them being music. I need to just get something to hook up my drum machine & sampler to a computer or something and then put it together.

Cool! What kind of drum machine and sampler do you have?
There are some pretty reasonable audio interfaces out there that you could look into for connecting to your computer.

Very cheap boss sp 202 & and then the corresponding boss 202 drum machine. They're really fun to mess around with though. I'm going to have to look into some of those audio interfaces. I ordered some alesis linelink cable tthat I think might help me?

I have a few pieces of shit I made dating back from 2008 to the summer of this year.

I've progressed from "apply a few filters in Audacity" remixes to spooky dark ambient. thumbup; / thumbdown;

So, are you running the sampler through the drum machine, or vice versa?
It looks like the sampler has a standard RCA out, so you could just get a simple RCA connector and plug into the headphone/mic slot on your computer and record straight to a simple DAW (even audacity would work for that).

I'm a little concerned about those linelink cables working with the sampler. Unless I'm wrong, aren't those usually 1/4" connectors?

I got them as a package deal and IDK really what to do with the sampler at this point (though I've messed around with it and know I will figure out what to do with it someday) so I don't really know what "running through" means but when I read through the manuals I think it did say something about playing the sampler through the drum machine with the use of some MIDI cables. Idk really what that means though

You're right about the linelink cable, I don't really know what I can do with it right now (because I can't even get my drum machine to work with the computer, and it) They are 1/4" connectors. Both of the machines have something that will fit these cables (on the sampler it's on the other side of that picture, but I see now it's for a mic)

I think I'll get the RCA connector haha thank you

MIDI's a different beast altogether. Instead of transmitting sound, it transmits data.

But yeah, looking at some pictures of the drum machine, I see a single RCA out, so I'm thinking you could probably connect the RCA-out to the RCA-in on the sampler and run another RCA-out from the sampler to your computer.

To connect the two, use one of these-
http://www.amazon.com/RiteAV-RCA-Stereo-Audio-Cable/dp/B000UZ66YY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1320775586&sr=8-2

Then you'll need one of these to connect from the sampler to you computer.
http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Audio-Cable-Splitter-1-Mini/dp/B00004Z5CP/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1320775618&sr=1-1

I haven't had any experience with these machines, but I assume the sampler has an audio through function so the sound from the drum machine will essentially play "through" the sampler, if that makes sense.

Cool!

Couple of things.

-You'll need to be recording to a DAW. You can find a version of audacity online for free, and that works as well as anything if you just want to do straight recording.

-Check your sound input settings. I know some computers have dedicated mic slots, but a lot don't. I don't know if you're running mac or windows though...

-Also, while you're connected to the computer, you should still be able to monitor sound via headphones through the drum machine.

Oooh Ok. That makes a lot of sense. I have audacity and I am running on a mac. I have headphones too so I'll just do all of those things. What do I check my sound input settings for?

Go to system preferences and click sound.

Then click on the input tab and change the setting to input under "use audio port for".

Finally got a chance to listen.
Really rad! Sampling can really be a lot of fun.
I have this little tascam Dr-05 handheld thing I take with me everywhere and I just sort of collect whatever sounds I can find.
I actually took it out to the woods a few weeks ago and brought in some pretty nice stuff.

Keep it up!
