So in light of the 3DS's disastrous performance thus far (only 710,000 units sold worldwide since march lol), starting August 12, Nintendo will cut the console's price from:
25,000 Yen to 15,000 Yen
$250 USD to $170 USD
$350 AUD to $250 AUD (lol poor aussies)
In addition, early adopters unfortunate enough to have purchased one at $250 will be receiving:
Super Mario Bros.
Donkey Kong Jr.
Balloon Fight
Ice Climber
The Legend of Zelda
And five other unspecified Virtual Console NES titles, as well as:
Super Mario Advance 3
Mario Kart Advance
Metroid Fusion
WarioWare Inc.
Mario vs. Donkey Kong
And five other unspecified Virtual Console GBA titles. The ten GBA games will only be given to those who purchased a 3DS at its original price: Nintendo has no plans to ever release them as standard Virtual Console titles.
so that's 20 games total for you early adopters with special exclusives as compensation confuseddood;
[spoiler]I think Nintendo could have avoided this mess simply by releasing the 3DS this holiday season with $170ish as its original price, but at least it seems they've acknowledged that they have made many mistakes regarding its launch. scarecrowdood;[/spoiler]
also apparently the 3DS mario game will be titled Super Mario 3DLand and the new mario kart game will simply be Mario Kart 7 goowan

So if you don't buy a 3ds before august 11th and connect to the store, you will never own Metroid Fusion. Ain't that some shit? I really hope fire emblems and minish cap aren't exclusive to ambassadors.
I'm going to start searching Gamestop's/eBay for a used one now. I'd love to snag a used one for cheap then get all those free games. wrench;

but $250 is now the established price for handhelds [three of the past four important ones launched at that price], $500/600 was not and still isn't goowan
but the best-selling handheld in history was far less expensive than its $250 competitor befuddlement
I honestly don't think people care much about what they get for the price; what matters to most is simply the price. They both play games, and the 3DS has more easily marketable features (OMG 3D TWO SCREENS). This was the very same situation the Wii and PS3 found themselves in (OMG WAGGLE), and that was disastrous for Sony.
It certainly would have been a very close competition had the 3DS remained $250, but with this rather sudden, hefty price cut, I now expect the Vita to struggle. n_u

yes, the ds outsold the psp. but the psp did do something that no other handheld was able to do before it, carve out some healthy market-share to form a niche market of its own. confuseddood;
and i really don't expect the vita to struggle. eighty lolworthlessdollarscome2august isn't necessarily an unimaginable premium to pay for something goowan
yes, the psp did manage to become the best-selling non-nintendo console in history by far (it's nearly at the GBA's total lifetime sales O_0)
However I expect Sony to have another issue that will hinder them in addition to the significant price difference and lack of a marketable gimmick: lack of recognizable games at launch. Of course, the 3DS had the exact issue and the Vita will have at least one huge title to rely on (Uncharted), but by the time the Vita's on sale, the 3DS will have Super Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, Star Fox, Kid Icarus, and all the other first-party titles that are the only reason to buy a Nintedo console. The Vita's lack of launch games and its much higher price will make it a hard sell, despite the fact that the console itself is actually worth more than what it sells for and the 3DS is worth quite a bit less . n_u
yes, the launch will probably be rough. but most launches are. n_u
it'll really just depend on how well sony can market the thing [please oh god let kb market it and not that black kid] in the beginning and get developers to support it with quality titles. if [huge if] sony can do this effectively, when the second wave of big games come out for both, the vita won't be on such bad footing.

Well, honestly, I think the early adopters of the 3DS
completely deserve it if they were so blinded by faith in Nintendo that they couldn't see that the console was a disaster from the day it launched. (https://boyah.net/forums/Smileys/default/spam.gif)

the only difference is that one is portable and the other isn't
both are still video game consoles :|

I still think (hope) that the 3DS is just stagnating now since there are no games. There are a lot of cool stuff coming, just not for another couple months. Still ridiculous that it takes so fucking long for shit to come out though, not even the DS or Wii were this bad (and they were bad)
Quote from: Snowy Deluxe on September 10, 2011, 03:51:37 PM

but it doesn't make them reasons to buy a 3ds either

the main improvement was in grfx
the 3ds "improves" grfx as well as adds a gimmick
I would count it as a 7th generation system had a 3D screen been tacked on without improving the graphical capabilities, but according to Nintebdo, they have indeed been improved. n_u
Quote from: Snowy Deluxe on September 10, 2011, 03:51:37 PM

they're not bad, but the only two good games could be played on another console for the past ten years minimum
And when every other current title is garbage, why even bother purchasing the console so early and at such an unjustified price? goowan

yes, i don't doubt that it'll get better with time
But that doesn't change the fact that Nintendo was high on arrogance when they decided to release it so early and so unfinished. goowan
Agreed.
The Vita is actually looking kind of appealing right now?
I dunno, I'll see what Nintendo's got for the 3DS Lite, but I'll probably just not get a portable system this gen or ever again dittodood;

The Vitamin looks a whole lot more appealing.
But it really depends if Sony can get more third parties on board sooner [yes, the PSP did have a good year in 2008 but that was too little, too late] or if Nintendo can turn around the sinking 3DS ship tomorrow and right its path before the Vitamin is even gracing us with its presence [which I don't think so, Nintendo is in a rather arrogant mood as of late]. goodjob;

QuoteThe mysterious downloadable DS version of The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords will have an entirely new single-player mode, Nintendo announced today.
Until now, all we knew about Four Swords was that it's an updated version of the four-player adventure that originally sat alongside A Link to the Past on the Game Boy Advance - except this time we can play through it without those ancient and troublesome Link Cables. New stages and abilities will unlock once the main quest is done.
You can download Four Swords on DS, DSi or from the 3DS eShop from the 28th September until the 20th February next year.

It's probably IGN screwing up sillydood;
the only technical way a downloadable game like that would work on original DS would involve using another system, like either Wii or DSi/3DS, to both serve the local wireless Download Play game copy and retrieve/store any save data to keep between sessions. And there's no way Nintendo would bother programming for that.
