Title: sudden gaming realizations you've had recently
Post by: Samus Aran on June 14, 2011, 02:21:22 PM
Today I just realized that the Windfall Island theme in Wind Waker is a remix of the Kakariko Village theme. awdood;

There are pieces of Saria's Song in the Earth Temple theme too.

did you notice outset island is a remix of kokiri forest giggle;

I realized only a few days ago that Midna hides in Link's shadow in Twilight Princess' Light World. awdood;

Also, I recently discovered that in Super Mario 64, the themes for Snow Man's Land and Rainbow Ride are arranged versions of Bob-omb Battlefield. myface;

Got songs confused, I meant Forest Haven. Honestly I had just heard about it and now that I listen I don't here it there either.

I have been lied to.

the hyrule field theme in ocarina of time changes after every completed dungeon goonish

the change is a simple rearrangement of the numerous eight-measure chunks that make up the main theme, but it's something i wasn't aware of until now

I guess that explains why OoT's Hyrule Field is one of the only ones I've never been able to memorize perfectly -- it's always rearranging itself. sillydood;

The song itself also becomes calmer when Link stands still, and becomes harsher when there are certain types of enemies nearby (which is not the same as the "enemy approaching" theme that also plays but i guess that one is for different enemies).

I'd always suspected that the song suddenly becoming more sinister had to do with nearby enemies, but now it's confirmed.  As for the part about it becoming calm when Link stands still, I'd always just assumed that the calming of the music meant the day was ending. befuddlement

evidence:

the five-minute hyrule field 'theme' we usually find on youtube (like this one) is actually just a compilation of every one of the eight-measure bits that can be heard the theme, but you would almost never hear this exact sequence in the game because it constantly changes

the part from 1:53 to 2:53 only ever plays in the presence of certain enemies (for instance, the tektites on death mountain and at the entrance to lake hylia)

the part from 3:44 to 4:39 only plays when link is standing still

I have a brand new appreciation for Ocarina of Time. UNLEASH THE BEAST

oh wow i get it

When in Hyrule Field, this song only ever plays for enemies at night, when there is no Hyrule Field theme playing.  During the daytime, the music of Hyrule Field itself changes when enemies are nearby. n_u

i may have to reevaluate my placement of ocarina of time on my list of favorite zelder games sillydood;

and, of course, there's the fact that the song that plays in the skyward sword trailers is zelda's lullaby backwards but i've already posted that elsewhere cnotedood;

now that i think about it, i can't help but wonder if all of this is also true of twilight princess' hyrule field theme befuddlement
it is

the parts from 1:11 to 1:49 and 3:50 to 4:27 only play in the presence of enemies, and it seems the parts from 1:49 to 2:15 and from 4:27 to 4:53 only play when link is standing still

and once again, the 'enemy approaching' theme:

only ever plays in hyrule field at night goowan

OH MY GOD I'M SO EXCITED I LOVE ZELDA AND VIDEO GAMES AND MUSIC AND VIDEO GAME MUSIC AND AWESOME

I wonder if all this is true of Wind Waker too. scarecrowdood;

it isn't true of majora's mask because mm simply uses an updated version of the original zelda theme :'(

And now I can't help but wonder if they'll continue this trend in Skyward Sword as well. giggle;
god i feel like an autist >_<'
Title: Re: sudden gaming realizations you've had recently

so the overworld music calms in wind waker, spirit tracks, and phantom hourglass as well when link is stopped, though it's far more obvious that the music has changed because link stopped moving in those games

unfortunately the overworld theme doesn't change for enemies in ww/ph/st, instead an entirely new piece is played :'(

This trend is a trend that has appeared in some form in every 3D Zelda game but Majora's Mask thus far and I'm only now realizing it. befuddlement

...i thought it was pretty obvious that certain parts of the theme only played while enemies were around in tp and oot

but i had no idea about the standing still thing or the post-dungeon rearrangement thing

still, calm down tec holy shit goonish

it was more obvious in tp because it actually sounded like the real enemy theme, but in oot, while i noticed it, i never realized it was only for enemies :'(

in wind waker, the wind god's aria and the earth's gods lyric are taken directly out of the title theme

can be heard from 0:06 to 0:07, 0:12 to 0:13, 0:18 to 0:19 and 0:24 to 0:25 in spoiler 1

can be heard from 0:30 to 0:31 and 0:42 to 0:43 in spoiler 1

This was probably meant to be blatantly obvious considering Fado/Makar and Medli/Laruto actually play certain parts of the title theme immediately after being awakened as Sages, which requires Link playing the Wind God's Aria or the Earth God's Lyric, but it took me years to finally realize it. goonish

I don't understand how anyone could possibly not immediately realize this.

As for the OoT Hyrule Field theme, 1:22-1:35 is a major part of the Wind Waker overworld theme.

also i think i now understand why koji kondo swears by midi so much, the silly tricks he accomplished with the overworlds of tp/oot/ww etc.  would be much more difficult to do as effectively and as seamlessly using a real orchestra befuddlement

Meaning, if Skyward Sword's overworld theme is orchestrated, I would not be surprised if SS does not follow the trend. :'(
or maybe nintendo loves midi because it's just cheap and lazy girl;
I just learned today that apparently the DualShock controllers, especially DS3, are very stackable. Two DualShock 3s in a stack are so stable that it won't even wiggle O_0
