Title: Stereotyping.
Post by: ikanaide on September 29, 2010, 11:13:20 AM
A few days ago I was on IM with my english friend and he was talking to me about playing on the 'Mario Kart' with his friends and he was telling me how he 'sucked' at the game and he said that if I was there I would beat everyone because I am japanese. I laughed at this comment as I am not familiar with this western stereotype of japanese people with video game. Is this a real stereotype amongst western people? I would like something to confirm ^_^

Thank You!

To a lot of westerners, we imagine Japanese people huddled in dark rooms playing Monster Hunter on their PSPs until their batteries [and replacement batteries] die.

Oh, and lots and lots of love pillows.

i conceptualize the japs by thinking that their parents are tied in with their cultural backgrounds and have a very defensive and protective barrier against foreigners who do not respect their traditions

That is true, a lot of elder japanese people hate gaijins. Especially people in america but I am fine with them but my granmother hate the souls of every american.

I can actually explain.
On Mario Kart Wii, players that are from Japan (via the World map when players are being selected) often have 2-3 star rankings. They're also in 9000+ scores for both battles and races.
I play Mario Kart Wii online almost every day, and it's yet to fail.

If you have it, we should exchange codes. <3
I'm a 2-Star, so I like to think I have a chance.  n_u

Yes, it seems to be a rather common stereotype that Japanese (or Korean in some cases) people are generally much better at video games and more intelligent than Americans.

She is far more popular in Japan than anywhere else so she is more common, but Hatsune Miku is not everywhere. ^_^

They aren't all close-minded the elder people have really hate toward gaijins but the young people and new generation people are far more open. For example, I have interest in different culture especially western culture but my grand parent hate American with all heart. So it is old people only which are close minded. I can see how you can make such conclusion however.

my brother is a teacher in japan, i forgot what region

but he says that everyone is rude to him because he's american, so he decided to stop giving a shit about manners because it's funnier just to make japanese people uncomfortable with his natural tendencies
