Some time ago I sold all of my video games, all I have left is a gamecube, n64, and a few games. Today I played some F-Zero GX and it was remarkably entertaining (I also still have SSBM).
I'm bringing these with me to my apartment, and I'm trying to remember all the awesome classics that I should re-acquire.
I immediately remember:
GameCube:
- Super Mario Sunshine
- Luigi's Mansion (god how I love this game)
- OoT: Master Quest (so sad I sold this)
- WindWaker
- RE4
I hate MarioKart (post-n64) and Mario Party. don't recommend them.
Mario Kart: Double Dash and Mario Parties 4-7
Tales of Symphonia.
lol
Also, I need to play Luigi's Mansion.
Fuck yes F-Zero GX. Best racing game of last generation. No questions.
For some reason I can't think of any great exclusives, but get Spider-Man 2. It's pretty fantastic.
An interesting Gamecube game that only a few other people around here have played is Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. It's kind of a mix between survival horror and puzzle-solving, although I can't say the game is "scary" so much as it is just very foreboding and creepy. It plays somewhat like an old RE game, in a way. The combat isn't the focus, but just a forewarning now - you may think the combat sucks...it kinda does, but you get used to it. Being able to target separate body parts is cool.
But the real catches are two things: the fucking awesome and highly Lovecraftian story (three evil god-like "ancients" essentially steering the fate of humanity in their favor, taking life as they see fit), and the "sanity" system. Basically, you have a sanity meter that goes down when you see zombies or anything "scary" (or do something morally horrendous, or other things too), and it only goes back by using the appropriate extremely Lovecraftian-sounding magic spell or by doing a finishing move on an enemy. The lower your sanity is, the more likely you are to hallucinate. Hallucinations range from small things like pictures on the walls changing or stone heads turning to watch you to mindfuck things like fake hardware problems with your TV and Gamecube, as well as weird things happening to the camera angle, your character, your enemies, etc. Sometimes the effects are fun, sometimes annoying - it's a very interesting grab-bag.
Oh, and there is no real "main character" for the most part...you play as different people through different generations of a few key locations, from the days of the Roman Empire all the way to the year 2000...all people connected by their experiences with the Ancients.
It's such a cool game, try it out. You can probably get it really cheap. The graphics may look really dated and the combat may seem dull, but it is such a unique and awesome game. Only for the Gamecube, too.
Other games I would personally recommend are Ikaruga, Tales of Symphonia, and the two Metroid Prime games. Can't think of any other essentials off the top of my head that you wouldn't already know about most likely.
Cubivore, and Timesplitters is pretty fun on GCN. Also as Kaz said Eternal Darkness was a very enjoyable game.

I almost said this because I've heard nothing but good things, but I've never played it myself

Oh durr. Must-haves.
I'm the only human on Earth that preferred Echoes to MP1 but fuck you guys I enjoyed it.
echoes had good boss fights.
i would recommend starfox assault for the multiplayer. it's fun enough.
starfox adventures lol
For somewhat of a long story, I suggest 'Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean' and 'Baten Kaitos Origins.' 'Baten Kaitos Origins' is in the past before Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean,' even though it was the second game.
Also, maybe 'Viewtiful Joe' and 'Viewtiful Joe 2?'
I think you might like Killer7. Other good choices would be Pikmin or Pikmin 2, Viewtiful Joe, Chibi-Robo, Custom Robo, and Paper Mario TTYD
oh you might want to try skies of arcadia legend and phantasy star online episodes I and II

I might want to try these too
I bought skies of arcadia on dreamcast last year but the first disc won't work :'(
I think I've been spoiled by modern consoles because I couldn't stand phantasy star online when I played it last year
I bought Timesplitters 2 knowing I had no Wii or gamecube. $5 for an amazing game is a great buy. baddood;

oh cool. I remember seeing that game all the time but I never played it... that definitely sounds lovecraft-inspired, I'll pick it up.
Yes Ikaruga and Metroid Prime, forgot those. I personally hated ToS, Paper Mario TTYD and Phantasy Star Online weren't favorites either baddood;

I played through both Baten Kaitos games when they came out, they were awesome, don't think I'd replay them though. Viewtiful Joe I never got into, maybe I'd like it now
I tried replaying Baten Kaitos, it was kind of hard due to the cheesiness of it all. The combat system was nifty the first time, but playing through it the second time I just didn't care for it.
Symphonia is fun for the combat, the plot is pretty painful.

The combat's repetitive as hell, so it doesn't really have that going for it either. wariodood;

how is it any more repetitive than a turn-based rpg? hint: it's not. at least you can create your own combos and style of fighting rather than "attack, watch animation"
If you get into Tales of Symphonia, then you can get a Ps1 and play fucking Tales of Eternia, because that game is even better.
OH WAIT WE LIVE IN THE WRONG CONTINENT IT'S TALES OF DESTINY 2
I FUCKING HATE HE-MAN
I feel like I'm the only one who still likes Abyss.

this proof is undone by the fact that Golden Sun is the greatest game, and is also a turn-based RPG.

well i never said symphonia is
better than any turn-based rpg...my favorite rpg is ff6 and that has very basic turn-based combat

I don't even really like RPGs and I agree that Golden Sun is fantastic.
Golden Sun sucked in comparison to Tales of Phantasia.
Cubivore is a game I always wanted to play but never did, find it and tell me if its good.
007 Nightfire is fun.
Also, pikmin, and kirby air ride
animal crossing is good if you want to waste dozens of hours doing absolutely nothing
I agree with Pikmin, Chibi-Robo, Killer 7.
And then I enjoyed Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, I was addicted to the Chao garden. giggle;
And if you like RPG's Symphonia and Baiten Kaitos. Both were above par IMO. Although I never finished Kaitos, and I always wanted to play the prequel. How was that anyone?
Also if you're going to be playing with friends a lot, I found Donkey Kong Jungle Beat a fun game for hanging out, even though it's one player. Same with FF Crystal Chronicles, but you'd have to get a bunch of those stupid connectors and some gameboy advances.

Woah woah woah.....you kidding me?
I bought phantasy star online back when it was new from target, except I didn't online and I thought the single player/mutiplayer would satisfy me. MAN WAS I WRONG. and now with the online not existing...I just am at a loss as to why you would mention this, I hope that you've actually played the single player yourself and can somehow persuade me to try it out again. Also mutiplayer is shit, one person dies and you all start over. Couldn't get past the first map playing 4 player back in the day.

Yes you are. There's a good example of a game I thought I'd get my "Tales of" fix but found myself wondering, why am I still playing this. Maybe I ought to finish it.

You should have made a thread about this a few months ago. I came across Cubivore at Gamestop for $5 and I bought it (Even though I already had a copy) and I sold it on ebay since I already had the game. I could have sold it to you.

Oh well, lol. It was still during the gamecubes lifespan that I had tried to get it off ebay, maybe early wii.
I think it was something like $30.

I thought Adventures was pretty good but generic game. but jesus christ what was the logic behind adding star fox characters
Assault's flying missions were fun. I don't think it's possible to emulate the greatness of Star Fox 64 at this point after the last three games completely butchered the series (except maybe with a nearly identical port of it in
3d n_n).
you mean "jesus christ what was the logic in making it so fox fights as slow as a goddamn turtle and only has like 3 moves he can do THE ENTIRE GAME"

i don't understand why they felt the need to make it star fox, it would have been fine with its generic anthropomorphic characters and not tainted a formerly excellent series of games
forever :'(
rare sucks
