QuoteAccording to an L.A. Times report, the Flaming Lips are set to follow-up their life- (and death)-affirming LP Embryonic with a full-album redo of Pink Floyd's gazillion-selling 1973 psych-rock classic Dark Side of the Moon.
The Lips version of Dark Side is a collaboration with the band Stardeath and White Dwarfs (which includes Wayne Coyne's nephew Dennis Coyne as a member), and features guest spots from Henry Rollins and Peaches. It will most probably be an iTunes-only release.
The announcement was made last night during a Q&A session with fans at a MySpace show last night at L.A.'s Nike/Ricardo Montalbán Theater. (Check out photos from the gig after the jump and in the photobook here.)
Other tidbits revealed: While Embryonic was the final album of the Flaming Lips' current contract with Warner Bros., they plan on sticking with the label for future releases.
Also, the video for "Watching the Planets" features a nude Wayne Coyne (as well as a bunch of nude bikers). The internet's not ready.
God damn holy shit it's going to be awesome. I really hope they make it into their own thing like they do with some of their live covers. And not even a week after Embryonic's release. hocuspocus;
Also, while I'm at it, let's also make this an Embryonic discussion thread. wariodood;
what the christ lol
can't wait to see how this works out but i can't help but be skeptical, that's some pretty goddamn sacred ground they're touching, no doubt in strange ways

I think that they're definitely going to do a damned good job of it. I just hope they don't do it exactly as the original was and add in a bunch of crazy shit to make it more like an actual Flaming Lips album, which they probably will.
Also, lol nude Wane Coyne.
Sounds awesome. thumbup;

THIS IS GOING TO BE ONE OF THE BEST THINGS EVER
...I'm actually a bit worried about Stardeath. They were pretty good, but they weren't great. But that won't drag the F'lips down. Peaches influence will be hilarious...I want to hear on Money. giggle;
Thief you bastard you stole my thread. :[
Anyways fuck yeah i cant wait.
sounds cool I guess

I kinda like Stardeath. I can't wait to see how they end up in future years, especially with the obvious 90's Lips influence. giggle;

I like the Lips, but I DO NOT WANT. If they want to do this live once or twice, okay, and if they want to cover one or two songs, that's fine, but covering the entire album is too much. It won't have the same feel as the original.

I don't think it's supposed to have the same feel. I'm pretty sure they're not trying to make it better than the original and they're just doing this for fun. doodhuh;
yeah, but i wouldn't find it that great without the touch of the original
i guess i just find covering a whole album to be a little much
yay another dark side of the moon tribute album...
No one can do "Dark Side of the Moon" better than Pink Floyd, NO ONE!
I'll listen to it online once but thats as far as I go
Dert Floyd already did it.

1.) The Wall =/= Dark Side of the Moon
2.) Other artists have covered the album too. We know.
3.) Those are awesome tracks.
I just listened to Dark Side of the Moon again and got really excited for this

usually when i listen to floyd i listen to Animals

no, i am not overly fond of that album
i like it, and i appreciate the growth of the band between that and Piper, and i like that Syd had less influence and all, but i still don't like love the album or anything
"let there be more light" starts out cool but gradually falls flat due to the chant-like nature, i think this would've been better as an instrumental
"remember a day" is actually quite cool, i enjoy it, though i'm not gonna orgasm over it or anything, its spaceyness is tight and refined
"set the controls..." is godly in its instrumentation, at least until it kinda degenerates into a meandering jam, but it's a definite must-have for early Floyd songs nonetheless
"corporal clegg" could've been cool, but i feel the guys never really finished it, and to be honest it's a bit annoying
"a saucerful of secrets," though extraordinarily long and mundane at times, is my favorite song on the album, it's downright spooky and extremely creative
"see-saw" is wright's song, right? i think remember a day is also. must be why both songs sound like "pink floyd covering the hippie generation." good, but not as good as his other song here, and kind of boring.
"jugband blues" isn't bad, and it's syd's only song here i think, but holy fuck it's depressing.
so yeah, i like the album, but i think almost every song has major faults, as compared to later efforts where they got their shit together
i don't think the album is useless or anything, just really hard to absorb to a point where it's not usually worth the effort, not to mention mundane and tired at times, as well as even unfinished in some areas
but hey, what's what happens when a band tries to grow so fast
syd barrett rules but i listened to pipers 2 much
none of their albums have 2 much of a psyhcedelic feel compared to saucersand pipers
well yeah but in general i just like their overt progressive rock more than their psychedelia
unless of course we're talking atom heart mother akudood;
idk my faves always changes, but after wish you were here i dont really like(except a few songs on the wall)
i hadnt listen to any of the albums post wall but i heard songs from the YOtuUEBS
and they werent too good tbh lmao
yeah i don't really like the post-wall stuff much either, gilmour simply cannot write music the way waters did, although he was still pretty ballin' on the guitar, wrote some cool stuff like "learning to fly" which sounds like gilmour admitting that he can't write music so the sincerity is nice
How come nobody ever talks about "The Final Cut"
It's like people don't even know it exists.

I think it's absolutely brilliant.
The wall is about personal isolation and the struggles of Pink.
The final cut is strictly a commentary on war and the bullshitters who make the moves. It's more focused and satirical in a lot of ways.
Musically, it's fucking awesome. Recurring themes, great orchestration and wailing guitar solos at the right spots.
Really??
i like the final cut a lot, it's a solid album yeah, and definitely overlooked, i don't love it though
sometimes i don't like how some songs on it sound like they are Wall outtakes, but they're still good
i've always had a soft spot for songs like fletcher memorial home, gunner's dream, and your possible pasts
it's a cool album to listen to along with the Wall, instrumentally and Roger Waters-ly similar, but lyrically different

I haven't found any wortwhile Floyd post-Wall, and I also think Learning To Fly sucks :<
Of all the PF albums I've heard, the Dark Side of the Moon is still my favorite. I'm just not very fond of covers of entire albums because, at the end of the day, it's still a lesser version of the original.

On the turning away????
other than dark side of the moon, pink floyd doesn't have an album that I can really like most of the songs on it.
Buttt the piper at the gates of dawn isnt bad. I like a couple on atom heart mother and... meddle is alright.
of course there's the wall which is pretty good. and animals sucks.
Pink floyd had a lot of great songs...just on scattered albums usually.

I cant disagree more and more and more and more and more etc.
Their albums are built to be listened to as a whole unit, not as an individual particle.
A lot of them dont make sense without the context of the rest of an album backing it.
They hurt from the whole ipod/itunes/shuffle way of digging tunes.
Bah.

yeah i have to agree, even with regard to their worse albums
though, when gilmour took over the band, suddenly some things did feel awfully single-ish, which was annoying as hell

saying "this" isn't an inside reference of any sort, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out what i meant akudood;
But I do agree about the name part. You just have to stick around more and get to know people.
Well if you just see this, you wouldn't know.
I would have understood if you put agreed or something.
Imagine being in a circle of people and someone like 'dude this place is fucking weird' and you 'this'
Its like 'wtf is that guy talking about, this what?'
get me?
thats how i thought of it.
