What's a socialist? In idiot terms please

Use your brain, and google.
A socialist is someone who believes that companies and corporations should not have control over the market and commerce; instead, the government should control it. The result is less exploitation of the consumer, equal to possibly worse quality of services, a greater focus on community and local government, fewer human rights violations, possibility of increased bureaucracy.
I think. At least, that's what my dad is.

That's not exactly in idiot terms.
This (http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism) might be a little bit easier to understand.
a simple working definition is that it's a method of economic organization where instead of resources and production (work) being owned and operated by private entities (as capitalists would have it), ownership and wealth is in some way distributed more "fairly," which can happen a number of ways... read the wikipedia tree on it though
