Title: Pokémon Sword and Shield
Post by: bluaki on February 27, 2019, 07:48:21 AM
The new Switch Pokémon game revealed today is gen8. Releasing late 2019.

Here's the 7-minute Nintendo direct: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOPVBm0sA7Q

The new "Galar region" is definitely Great Britain and imo it's very pretty.
New starters: Grookey (grass monkey), Scorbunny (fire bunny), and Sobble (water lizard).
Gyms are back and wild battles work the same way as they always have.

So far there's no signs of any of the problems with Let's Go carrying over to here, which I appreciate. It'll probably have normal controls and outfit customization too, but those aren't quite confirmed yet. They probably won't say anything about PokeBank support until very shortly before release.

graphically, they look great. i kinda hope the gyms in this game sort of incorporate the "challenges" that sun/moon had. i think a fusion of both would be really cool.

i'm pretty excited about this, always hyped for the next main entry in one of my favorite series

Grookey is maybe the worst Pokemon name I've ever heard and I love it

If that bunny ends up being fire/electric I will be very happy

I'm p. okay with all the first stages of these guys though so it's all up to the final stages/types

Like I said in the chat thread, I just wish there was an improvement on the game's animations and protagonist's models

Still gonna preorder this and become a pokemon master ofc no matter what

Fire/electric would rule, and make it so Heat Rotom isn't the only one anymore. We always need more variety. They've been doing good with recent gens and having starters with interesting, varied type combos. Hope we'll get some cool typing again.

Yeah I'm not much of a fan of the Rotom forms so I'd really like to see other versions for Electric: Ghost/Fire/Ice/Grass

Really electric as a whole really suffers from a lack of secondary type diversity that I'm tired of hearing "But Rotom!" as a response
Title: Re: Pokémon Sword and Shield

Rotom is dumb tbh, and i'm sick of multi-forme Pokemon
Title: Re: Pokémon Sword and Shield
Post by: bluaki on February 28, 2019, 04:10:46 AM
Unless you count Pikachu (or Jolteon), none of the starters so far have had any Electric typing.

Most of the types have been on at least one starter: Charizard has Flying, Charizard-X has Dragon, Venusaur has Poison, Empoleon has Steel, Delphox has Psychic, Decidueye has Ghost, Primarina has Fairy, and Fighting/Ground/Dark are each on multiple starters.
but none of the standard starter trios have ever, so far, evolved into a Normal, Rock, Bug, Ice, or Electric-type.

I'd like to see Scorbunny get Fire/Electric. That's a really nice typing.

I could see Grookey turning grass/rock also.

I think Grass/Rock would be cool; it kind of seemed like a drummer in the trailer. So it would be a good pun if it turned out to be a rocker

anyway i just saw this thing for the first time ever and i've decided it's actually the worst pokemon. i'm sorry eiscue and applin

probably the ugliest gen 5 pokemon at the very least

Ok so I got this and so far it's very fun; there are so many useable Pokemon in every route and the wild area that it's really hard sticking to a 6 man team.

Dynamax stuff is actually sort of fun. Way better than the stupid Zmove shit. Not as fun as mega evolutions but eh... maybe more balanced though?

The game actually does a semi-decent job of balancing levels even with the mandatory experience share. Your rival is a total pushover though at least through the first two gyms.

My two main complaints thus far are that at first it is absolutely jarring that there is no voice acting. I know Pokemon doesn't do this but as a game on a home console I kind of thought there would be cutscenes with voice acting or something. Nope. Nothing.

Also the game outside of the wild area is super linear and doesn't create much of a sense of a region. More like a rail you can't navigate off of. Towns are also pretty boring imo.

This shit is super weird to me in Luigi's Mansion 3 too lol, and its compounded by the fact that there's vocal noises, but no actual like words and phrases and shit. Just feels weird idk

I think Nintendo's ability to get away with grunt-acting in their games is coming to an end lol it's starting to get into uncanny valley territory methinks

it's most annoying when the "noise voice acting" is happening CONSTANTLY. i remember playing newsmbu and finding it very annoying that you've got mario, luigi, toad, and peach all communicating continuously via grunting in the intro

actually, i think toad's voice might be single handedly ruining this "vocal style" nintendo does

Update: Later towns are better designed and much prettier. But still not much to do in them.

Also raids are fun. Finding a Gigantamax raid is pretty exciting

loving this game so far. the whole spectator sports aesthetic is really cool, right down to the goofy but really endearing trading cards. dynamax is cool too, and wow, raids that don't suck! and it's just exciting to have pokemon in hd on a console.

obviously i'm as annoyed with the dex cut as i should be, but i can't deny that i've been having a blast with everything that is in the game.

Just beat this last night. Very enjoyable game on the whole. The way they structured the final battles was great imo. Definitely unique to Galar and I wish that was how they always structured the end game. I will say the fight against the legendary pokemon is a bit anticlimactic though.

Not a ton of postgame content unfortunately but I am still having a ton of fun trying to get all the gigantamax pokemon from raids and I love the idea of the experience candy you receive to help raise low level pokemon into relevance more quickly.

Post by: Samus Aran on November 25, 2019, 03:05:51 AM
beat it now as well, still got post-game stuff to do tho. i put about 45 hours into this before "beating" it. 200 pokemon caught.

the game's got its issues but all in all it's just another great entry for this series. story-wise it's pretty weak but i liked it more than x/y in pretty much every way other than the obvious one (the dex cut).

btw, idk if y'all know about this already, but they are going to be adding at least 35 pokemon back in, likely during events. datamining has shown data/sprites for the gen 1 and 7 starters, various legendaries, etc.

nno is checking IVs easier or has it always been this simple

Also raids make it very easy to get good IV pokes

Also battle points are cheaper for Power Items, Destiny Knot. Also feel like it's easier to get BP now in general

What's weird about the no voice acting is that it looks like they set up the cut-scenes with voice acting in mind. The way they make you sit through the whole animation of any particular part of the scene before you can advance the text box.

Just finished. Did all the single player stuff, decided I'm not going to complete the Pokedex. I got over 200 though.

Overall, this was decent, but it felt like they played it too safe overall, or rushed it, or something. It's a little bizarre how linear Galar is. There are no nooks and crannies, no dungeons, only a couple areas that are barely maze-like. It made the whole thing feel less adventurous, like there was nothing to explore. What's there is nice, but it's just so stripped back. This clearly was a conscious decision, but I wonder why. Did they not think dungeons were fun? Or is it just a way to get the game out on time while making a new engine.

The Wild Area is neat but ultimately just a toe dip and kind of dull. Game Freak evolve their games so slowly, so hopefully there will be a much better and bigger instantiation next time.

Story was also pretty bad, even for a Pokemon game. I liked the characters I guess, and I liked that gym leaders had a little more to do than just be fought once and disappear.

I liked some of the QoL things like accessing your box anywhere and being able to fly early and pretty much everywhere. Camping was ok, but cooking too slow so I hated doing it.

That's a lot of complaining for what is a really good game, but man, it could've been a lot better. It's a huge step back from VII, which might actually be my favorite gen. I suspect that in a year I'll barely remember what happens in this one, just like VI (seriously, that one's a huge blank in my mind for some reason). Hopefully the next gen will push things forward again, now that the Switch stuff is figured out. I guess this has been a trend since gen IV... First game on a system is meh, second one is amazing. Really hope that continues.

cooking is initially cool because of how convenient it is, and the minigame is very very cute

but yeah man eventually i just started using healing items like in old games instead lmao. it gets really tiresome. HOWEVER i had to do some camping regardless because that's how you get sylveon in this game. playing with your eevee.
