Title: emote referendum 1, retroactive post revision, and other important topics

should we replace all instances of giggle; with :69gp3o:

but do we really want words like (https://boyah.net/forums/Smileys/default/Picture_2_copy.png) to be uncensored

personally, i prefer the amusing censor approach to slurs

we're in a sticky situation now since the words are posted any time the emote is used.

and disabling the emotes would make all such words visible in their raw form lol, which i think would be worse

I can add them as a word filter.

Typing them in caps or pluralizing it makes it not censored.

And I can also go in and eventually do a mass find and replace akudood;

at the same, i don't want to run the risk of chilling free speech on boyah lol, and i'm not sure how i feel about retroactively modifying the posts of other users unless we really have just cause for doing so

i think this is a very fair approach, anyone who desires mass search-and-destroy editing of old posts can put in a formal request to have an admin do it

we should make that policy known beyond this thread lol

I'll probably need to write up a script to do this since it's not a SMF built in feature

i mean you'd have to do something p. drastic like indiscriminately delete dozens of posts in a short period of time before we might consider it "abuse", and even then we'd take a case-by-case approach lol

But that's what I don't agree with. If deletion is allowed somebody should be able to indiscriminately delete their own posts or all of them whenever they want. Nobody should be stopped from deleting their own posts unless you're going to disallow deletion all together.

the more deletions there are the less accurate the post tracking stats become, which is why i'm okay with limited deletions under certain circumstances (and would prefer editing to outright deletion) but generally against mass post purging

it's less a matter of opinion and more about mitigating the magnitude of damage to boyah's clerical functions lol

Though couldn't that possibly be solved by messing with the settings of the recycle board? As far as stats go.

Having given this some thought, how would you guys feel about an option that modifies (as in, removes the content of) and hides (from all but mods) undesirable posts? befuddlement

that would, at the very least, resolve boyah's counting problem while satisfying the desire for certain posts to be scrubbed, and i don't see any reason why it wouldn't be possible

just edit and then move it there
Title: Re: emote referendum 1

also, for the record, when a post is edited, the content of that post pre-edit isn't visible to mods, and i don't think it's visible to admins either

i would bet that pre-edited posts aren't recorded anywhere at all but i'd need an admin to confirm that lol

so, in practice, edit-and-hide could be as effective as outright deletion, without damaging the stats calculator further
