Obviously with COVID right now things are a bit wack, but generally speaking do you follow the competitive scenes for any games?
I try to follow DBFZ stuff as much as I can, the regional finals lately have been really hype, even if they are online. Japan's finals next week are gonna be offline though...might not be a great idea lol
I used to follow competitive Melee a little bit a long long time ago
Ill watch highlights from LoL and Rocket League but I never live watch matches and have no idea which players are on which teams anymore
I watch evo and that's about it
I watched Overwatch for a hot second but stopped caring. Feels like rooting for corporations rather than teams.
Rocket League should be on ESPN main.

same exact experience here lol
i used to follow ssbm super closely and i just started following it again now that that i'm a melee degen again
That is actually how I feel about pro sports too hm. Only real difference being that you can pretend the team represents your city/ area rather than the corporate ownership I guess since the teams are named for places rather than ROCCAT or Cloud9.
Maybe with exception for the Green Bay Packers since they're publicly owned
Overwatch actually does have city associations. First season was fun for that reason, but then players started getting traded and I was like "oh yeah professional sports"

Yeah it's lame. You get attached to players and then suddenly they play for a rival and you're supposed to turn on them? It's weird. That's why college sports always made more sense to me from a fan perspective because players generally don't go to another team short of turning pro
See this is why the ambiguity of "pro" fighting games is so good, a lot of people wish it was more like big esports games but I rather enjoy how grassroots fighting game tournaments still kinda are, even when they get as big as EVO. It's still all about individual players. I love that.

yeah and until you have like a 100% korean team for somewhere that isn't korea lol

It also helps that fighters are typically 1v1 so you don't have that conflict of rooting for team vs player. You can just always root for the player. That's what I enjoyed about Smash in the beginning anyway. You can just root for a personality you like
i somewhat followed smash ultimate for a bit, and i know plenty about melee's top dogs from watching old sets and stuff
i do prefer watching more "traditional" fighters but good smash sets are still hype as fuck too
i started following ssbm kinda close-ish at around the time when the first melee documentary thing came out because i thought it was really interesting. stopped following it so much when armada quit but recently started getting a little more into it again after randomly stumbling on a recent zain vs hbox set that had me really glued. my favourite player in the scene is probably m2k.
i've been following rocket league on and off for a long time (like since OG season 3). recently started watching more again after a long time of not really following it and was pretty mindblown at how much the meta has progressed in the esport. it's actually crazy how the players have consistently continued to improve. nutty plays that i used to only joke about being possible are now looking more possible than ever. i feel like there a bunch of stupidly skilled kids that are barely too young to participate in the esport right now and over the next few years they will be unleashed on us, not to mention players from regions that don't have a place in the esport yet. i've been a turbopolsa fan ever since his debut on northern gaming and will probably continue to support whatever team he's on.
lastly i'm really into the competitive scene for modern tetris and have been since around may last year, a scene which is still very much grass roots. the classic tetris scene has gained a decent bit of traction in the last few years with the ctwc event but for modern tetris there still isn't really anything apart from jstris cup and more recently tetrio cup which aren't even official tetris releases but fangames. despite all of that and the lack of support from the official tetris company, the competitive scene still has a wealth of extremely skilled players and a very strong community in which i've made a lot of good connections. i play tetris myself as well but i'm only about average.
armada's been speedrunning sm64 instead lately n_u
and improving extremely fast, god gamer that he is

i'd like to get more into competitive tetris- i got super sucked into tetris 99 but never really followed up on traditional 1v1 tetris

if you are interested in 1v1 tetris you should definitely give it a try. it's a simple game but with a very deep pool of knowledge and research into different competitive (and also not so competitive but fun to do) techniques and a very high skill ceiling. if you're looking for a starting point then read below but if not then just ignore.
puyo puyo tetris is a good place to start, not the pc version though because the pc port for ppt is the most scuffed thing i've ever seen. puyo puyo tetris 2 came out recently as well but honestly there's not that much of a difference and i've been hearing issues about the game from within the community, not that ppt1 is free of issues itself.
if you don't feel like paying for a game then there's jstris and tetr.io on the browser. jstris has large public lobbies with lots of people for more of a t99 vibe but also smaller lobbies for a more competitive experience. i will say though that the game isn't very noob friendly based on the average skill of the players there, it was basically the standard place for all the top players for the longest time. that being said, it has a lot of single player modes as well that are good for improving different things.
tetr.io is more recent and has gained a lot of popularity up until now. basically a better looking version of jstris with slightly more emphasis on efficient downstacking because there is a damage multiplier based on how many back-to-backs you chain. for that reason i'd say it's more noob friendly than jstris cuz you don't have to necessarily be speedy to win or rather being speedy doesn't give you as overwhelming of an advantage. there is also a ranked 1v1 system on there with decent-ish matchmaking and less trolls in general.
damn thanks for the link I love tetris
All I know about Tetris tech is stuff I get from when Simpleflips sometimes plays Tetris. BT Cannon this, albatross that.
i got into rocket league when it went f2p and im super addicted to the game. ive made it to diamond in 1v1 but am pretty hard stuck atm. i really wanna get cracked at rl but its gonna take like 500 more hours probably. super awesome game
i used to be pretty into the dota 2 pro scene, but that's fallen off in recent years a bit. still watch every international tho

btw when i said tetris i meant og tetris, not smth like t99.
there's actually a league for it, as well as divisions. you're unironically doing a stand off w/ someone in your division every other week on stream for documentation. babby divisions start lower levels, meta divisions start at lv 18. each player starts out with the same pieces, so it's dependent on the player's organization skills. people usually do the left or right, never middle. ft3. i think it's hilarious how they call it a "dirty tetris" when someone does one while cleaning up their zone mid-way lol. there's some depth to it, like das vs hypertapping, playing on emu vs actual nes. have to do pull of tetris more or else the lines you complete that aren't a tetris contribute to you going up in level with less pts total when it comes toward endgame, dont want to be chasing after tetrises when you're nearing 19+. though much more experienced players dont mind it at all, and can do consistent tetrises until like 23+ when it becomes too fast.

i watch some obscure streamers. the community is actually close knit, and there are people who watch the same streamers. so sometimes I'll be in the most obscure channel doing runs, and find them in another obscure channel running the same game. p kool

yeah dude, basically every speedrun community is like that. its one of the cooler aspects of the hobby imo.

neat that sounds interesting. what i would be really interested in is ranked 1v1 tetris (similar to t99) which I might get to try when tetris effect comes to switch. i know there are already sites where you can do that but it'd be nice to have it on console

the go to for ranked 1v1 console tetris rn is tetris effect and puyopuyo tetris, the latter is more OG/traditional whereas effect is a bit more gimmicky and not as played by the tetris community at such a large scale. outside of consoles, tetr.io is a very good site for ranked 1v1 and it's been growing a lot.
you also expressed the same interest in comp tetris in this same thread last year tho lol, feel free hmu if you decide to actually get into it i can show you different techniques & stuff

lol i feel like i've been expressing interest in competitive tetris for like 10 years
i think i am above average but who knows with 1v1. consistent at tspins, rotating both directions, building flat, random sequences but i am sure i have a lot more to learn
puyo puyo tetris.. i've never really understood is it puyopuyo or is it tetris lol
it's BOTH
You can choose to play either one, and you can play puyo vs. tetris. junk blocks get sent to your opponents accordingly. it's GREAT
people complain about the damage system between puyo and tetris all the time lol and there is also the frowned upon center 4 wide combo (similar to wobbling in melee) that the damage system in ppt basically facilitates and the online is also ass cuz there are no servers, but despite all of that it's a very well loved game by both the puyo and tetris communities. ngl tho i know basically nothing about puyo and the communities are pretty separate for the most part from what i've seen, most people just main one.
from what you're saying it sounds like you're above the casual level, but if you get more into tetris you will realise that average level is kinda all over the place, i still consider myself average or maybe a bit below. i guess it's like any other competitive game where once you start getting better you realise that are so many very good players and the top players are leagues even above those and then you start to reconsider what average means.. there is probably a similar thing with melee too
for real tho if you got any specific questions you can dm me on discord or something, same goes for anyone else interested in tetris
puyo puyo tetris rules
idk if anyone saw the rlcs fall major that happened like a week ago, first international lan event in like 2 years. it was pretty sick. i genuinely think rocket league is one of the best mainstream esports ever. not gonna say any more about it tho if nobody else saw it
