i forgot to post in here that i did finally watch progressive not that long ago. and it wasn't very good. 6/10 material. it's a complete mess and completely misses every point that made the original so good.
watching alternative rn (halfway through) and it's already a little better than progressive, but still not that good. the pacing is better and it's more fun and a lot subtler and isn't trying so hard to be "random XD"
it's so weird. i feel like the people who made progressive hadn't actually seen flcl since they were 13, and they just remembered the original being quirky and random and totally forgot about the subtlety and coming-of-age plotline. like the pieces are there in progressive, there's obviously an attempt...but it's the furthest thing from cohesive. again, it's just a mess. they even somehow managed to mess up the sound mixing??? like half the time you either can't hear the pillows tracks or they're too loud
