Quote from: Nyerp on December 25, 2022, 08:29:31 AMhelp, my cyberstalking is being cyberstalked! mods!!!!!

*british voice*

Aye lahf't agayne (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/agayne). xiapproves;

i'm kinda just wingin' it as well as i can lmao

and even that's more like eye dialect (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_dialect) than true transliteration

Surely there must be something like Pinyin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinyin) to Chinese, or the Library of Congress (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ALA-LC_romanization_for_Russian) system to Russian. befuddlement

do you find it weird that in french we have our own spellings and pronunciations for (some) states of the united states?

georgie
virginie
floride
caroline du nord/sud
dakota du nord/sud
louisiane

tex-AHs n_u

r*ssian has its own variants for several states as well lolol

e.g.,

delaware -> "delaver"

georgia -> "dzhordzhija" lmao

kentucky -> "kentookki" giggle;

Quote from: Kalahari Inkantation on February 05, 2023, 08:18:07 AM-when, exactly, to use "the"

Although by now I have spoken American for literally decades, it feels like this somehow still eludes me on occasion. befuddlement

Quote from: Thyme on February 05, 2023, 08:29:58 AMfunny you mention that, this is something native french speakers can struggle a bit with when they start learning english because in french you use le/la pretty much every time

i'm sure there's many other examples but i can only think of one rn, when you present someone by their title:

"this is the doctor gibbings" (voici le docteur gibbings)
putting it in english sounds awkward
NOT putting it in french sounds awkward

won't someone blease helb us Americans as a Third Language [ASS-L] speakers :'(
