Post by: Commander Fuckass on June 26, 2014, 07:55:17 AM

Dragon Age II isn't that bad

Nintendo isn't doomed

Mario Kart 7 is the best Mario Kart

Fallout New Vegas > Fallout 3

PC gamers are the biggest plague on the gaming community. They bitch and moan about every little thing to the point that I'm embarrassed to be associated with them.

it is kind of stupid (but necessary for the industry, i guess) to buy new games when there are a SHIT ton of great games that you'd probably love that have already come out

and my opinions on smash go without saying

also mario kart ds > every mario kart (haven't tried new one though)

i think it's just that people are nostalgic about that one because it's right around *that* period of gaming

you know the one

it did have some very good tracks though. a lot of the ones brought back for the later games end up being some of the best tracks in those games.

but tbh, actually PLAYING that one today, its mechanics haven't aged super well. and it doesn't particularly have any sort of charm that maintains its age. it's just a generic-looking 3d mario kart game. the bare basics.

snaking is honestly the only thing that has made a mario kart game worth playing for a long period of time for me
it's the only kind of "metagame" that any mario kart has to offer imo

I've actually been "fire hopping" for years just because it would seem like something that would make sense in a video game n_u

my only experience with randomly generated content was with four swords

my problem with it is that while it's capable of creating a virtually infinite array of "unique" maps, that uniqueness is really only very superficial, at least as it appeared in four swords, and while it's fun the first few times around it quickly becomes quite easy to notice the frequent repetition that is the nature of procedurally generated content

locations might be "new" technically but feel stale because it's obvious that the same limited assets are being recycled
the metroid games (or at least the 2d ones) would be virtually flawless if not for the arbitrary scattering of valuable item upgrades about the map, which imo interferes with otherwise fantastic pacing

i was wary of first playing super metroid because i feared that frequent 'backtracking' would be an ever-present turnoff for me

i actually ended up finding the backtracking element to be non-invasive and extremely efficiently implemented to the point at which i would hardly refer to it as backtracking at all, and now i believe that the fact that the games aren't strictly linear adds to the sense of satisfaction one derives from gradual progression through exploration and discovery

but oh my god, the random placement of important but non-essential items

maybe it's just me and i suck at video games, but in order for a novice player to collect enough missile/super missile/power bomb/energy tank/etc. upgrades to be comfortable with actually moving forward, it's necessary that the player either:

1. shoot at/bomb absolutely every cell on the grid
2. consult a guide

both of which hinder the pacing of otherwise astoundingly well designed games

this is also one of a few big issues i had with skyward sword too, though it's even more extreme in that game thanks to the fact that one both has to discover and activate a goddess cube on the ground and then go wasting precious minutes searching around for it in the boring and utterly pointless sky

skyward sword would be vastly improved were it not for that

i know that arbitrary distribution of important but non-essential items is pretty much a staple of gaming at this point, especially metroid, so i don't actually expect that to change anytime soon lol

but i do wish the process of obtaining those sorts of things were less arduous, as it's generally the low point of any game for me
backtracking in the primes is definitely excessive

but it's virtually a non-problem in the 2d games imo lol
but really i feel sorry for anyone who tried to play a prime game as an introduction to metroid

prime 1 is apparently the best of them and it was mostly just a clunky fps with extremely time-consuming backtracking

I only dislike fox when someone picks him just to spam his laser from the edge in a 4 man game so you have to chase him the whole match

I like any character with a spike so Falco is better to me

"somewhat boring" is not quite how i'd describe how i feel about gtav on its own, mostly just a way i'd describe the way gta games are built in general

it's like...in gtav, i like the characters a lot, i like the interactions between them, the heists and the stuff leading up to them are really cool. and it's a fun game to just goof off in.

but i have a problem with the mission-based structure of rockstar games in general. it's disjointed and repetitive. it makes an otherwise interesting big open sandbox world into "drive along the yellow line" or "drive along the yellow line AND don't get caught" whenever you're not, well, shooting dudes.

not to say that games in general aren't repetitive and samey when it comes down to it. but what you're repeating in rockstar games isn't all that interesting to me.

the reason i liked rdr so much (compared to gta games) was largely because its setting and story.

all in all i like gtav quite a bit too but i can't get around the fact that it's still a gta game.

i have yet to play mgs5

but quiet is the nastiest, rankest, most obvious piece of dickbait in the history of human entertainment media and i have always been absolutely embarrassed for gaming as an industry that such a blatant bit of fapbait could be prominently featured in the promo material of an otherwise p. serious game at its core

i know her story

i was REALLY hoping, and trusted, against all odds, that there would be so, so much more to kojima's """words and deeds""" comment than there turned out to be

i wanted to be ACTUALLY ashamed of thinking she looked so damn stupid

But once the reviews started pouring in and I realized what the man actually meant by that, I vomited and dissociated myself from """gaming""".

realtalk™ tho:

i am not morally opposed to nudity/lasciviousness/sexualized fanservice in video games when it's contextually appropriate

examples of games in which such content is contextually appropriate:

even if i personally still cringe and squint during a lewd scene in mass effect or witcher, or avoid a game like dead or alive like the plague, such content still has every right to exist if there is an audience willing to pay for it

my real issue with """quiet""" is that she is horribly inappropriate considering the overall context of the game

quiet is cheap trash """fanservice""" that pretends to be something more meaningful than that

she's an idiot dressed like stripper in the middle of a desert with a retarded """backstory""" to weakly justify her existence

i'm just a little offended that kojima apparently seems to think i'm some low-functioning ape who buys even serious games exclusively with his dick

but the fact that """gamers""" everywhere seem to love quiet for some reason (she must be one of the most popular female characters of the 8th gen) must mean that, in general, kojima is correct: the average """gamer""" is a low-functioning masturbating ape
the only other explanation is that ""gamers""" celebrate quiet en masse as some sort of a message against the omnipresent sjw boogeyman from a high-tier japanese dev, but that would be extremely ironic because quiet's actually not shy about about taking men down a nut notch or two in game

of course, this is absolutely true, and i would say it's a popular opinion among the fraction of souls fans who aren't delusional

unfortunately, they are only a fraction

you're right in that there's a big moronic circlejerk about how dark souls is le hardest game ever, but the sorts of suckers who make that outrageous claim are desperate, insecure nerds who define their self-worth in life by their performance in video games, and are bragging by proxy when they claim a game they successfully finished is the hardest of all time

he's honestly not too hard so long as you don't let him intimidate you

the common strategy of hiding in a corner and taking opportunistic shots at him leaves the player much more vulnerable than they need to be

i made that very same mistake in my first playthrough and it took me quite a while to beat him using that method

but as i learned in my second playthrough, if you just rush him and behave as aggressively as he does, he staggers a lot and goes down rather quickly lol

could you provide an utmost generic, sanitized, spoiler-free explanation of why you are beginning to feel this way

I can try
1. I'm not a fan of the breakable weapons. I know you constantly get more, but there's an inherent problem with relying on picking up weapons as you go; you can't settle on one combat type. You have to be comfortable with using swords, boomerangs (which suck), giant two-handers, spears, etc. Maybe I just wanna use a sword dangit.

2. The open world is a bit TOO big. It seems weird to complain about this, but it's an issue for me. Mainly because exploration, mostly just getting around, is not all that fun to me. Navigating the map usually boils down to, find a tall cliff you can jump off to paraglide around with. And don't get me started with climbing cliffsides and the FUCKING RAIN!!!

3. Speaking of climbing, it's too slow. This is more a nitpick than a genuine complaint though.

4. This is probably the biggest thing personally; there's like, no damn story in this game. It's all pretty much optional if you want something, but even then, it's not even very interesting. I know most Zelda games have little, or simple plots, but they were usually enough to carry me along. This game isn't doing that for me.

5.I feel that it relies too much on the "survival elements" to remain compelling. Like, to try to keep you immersed in the world.

6. This point is a little more vague, but it simply does not feel like a Zelda game. I can't fully explain easily what I mean, but when I pick up a Zelda title, there is a certain feel that I expect, and I don't get it here.

7. After doing a couple Divine Beasts, I'm kinda sad that there's no "real" dungeon (yet) in the game. Even the divine beasts just feel like a shrine, just.... a bit bigger. They're more complex, sure, but they're over pretty quickly.

Basically, in summary, I still think it's a good game, but I don't like it as a "Zelda" game
I'd still recommend you play it though, as I am most definitely in the minority here.

this is a decent list
I have last guardian, nier seems good but not a system-seller, not that interested in nioh, bloodborne looks fantastic but I am absolutely terrible at souls games and already find them scary enough so I don't think I'd actually play the game
got me with unch4rted and horizon but there's only 3/4 games on that list worth it to me and the ps4 has been out for 3.5 years
I mean hey I almost had a PS4, in fact David's has been sitting on my desk since TLG game out (and he's never expressed any interest in having it back) so in theory I could just get the other 2/3 games I don't own (well, David has Unch4rted so I guess just 1 or 2 games) and not have to spend $300

Until Dawn
EDF 4.1
Dragon Quest Heroes
Gravity Rush 2
Nier Automata
Horizon Zero Dawn
Uncharted
Nioh
Tales of Berseria

Oh shit, did I go over 5?

persona 5
Resident evil 7
Street Fighter V (arguably)
Batman AK
Blazblue
Project Diva
Kingdom Hearts I guess
Odin Sphere
Valkyria Chronicles (again, arguably)

These are all exclusives too, with the exception of a few.

Well see, if you already have a ps4 lying around, of course you wouldn't be interested in getting your own.
nah even then i would only be a little more interested in it, and still only 4 games is pretty sad

But since you want me to address your list:
Until Dawn - not my thing
EDF 4.1 - not my thing
Dragon Quest Heroes - mehhhhh
Gravity Rush 2 - would probably get if it was $10
Tales of Berseria - nah
persona 5 - can get on ps3 and it's basically the same
Resident evil 7 - I suppose, but again more something i'd get at $20
Street Fighter V - Would be interested in but fighting games are usually a bad investment for me
Batman AK - I have the first two arkHAAAAMS games on Steam and haven't touched them
Blazblue -  eh
Project Diva -  no thank you
Kingdom Hearts I guess - that franchise is too fucked to even consider getting back into
Odin Sphere - that's a fucking ps2 game bro
Valkyria Chronicles (again, arguably) - ps3 game

they have historic and nostalgic value, but no practical value as tools (if their games are easily accessible on newer platforms, which is the case for most retro gaming hardware today)

in my eyes, yes while many nes games are available on newer hardware, or emulator  (nes is just an example) there is nothing quite like holding that classic nes controller

so it has nostalgic value lol n_u

old hardware is also valuable if you happen to already own games for the old hardware

but to go out of your way to buy old hardware and old games for old hardware when you could much more easily and cheaply buy the remakes and ports and remasters and digital versions that are widely available on newer platforms seems like a needless expense, unless you truly value the nostalgia/history factor

it's not really the length i'm bothered by

it's the fact that it contained not a shred of new information

it was merely a well-animated version of the very same story we'd been given in the weeks before the last of us even launched, through the prequel comic books

the dlc should have been something new rather than merely a 1:1 reenactment of something we already knew
at the very least, they could have given us the satisfaction of seeing how ellie and riley coped with fate

and the absolute most interesting thing they could have done with that story is allow the player to witness as ellie came to the realiziation that she wasn't changing at the same rate as riley, and then deal with the emotional consequences of that

instead it just cuts to black with barely any more than a 'yep we're fuck;ed lol'

it's just so redundant and seems so unfinished
i'm not saying the dkcr games are bad

but they're barely anything more than basic sidescrolling platformers

you know, the sort of game nintendo itself could have whipped up in a week

so why did retro specifically have to develop dkcr, when their talent could instead have been leveraged to do something a little bit more unique than a standard sidescroling platformer

they had well proven themselves to be more capable than to be relegated to that basic assignment

which is why i say that simple projects like dkcr and mario kart, good as they may be, are a waste of the unique talent retro once had

tatl >> navi >> midna >>>> fi

midna is rude and domineering from the very moment she forcefully imposes herself into your life, using you as a mere vector to effect her own goals for like the entire first half of the game

and then [glow=black,2,300]she gets ill and aww all of a sudden i'm supposed to be endeared by her plight[/glow] saddood;

Title: Re: Unpopular Opinions: Vidya Game Edition
Post by: Kalahari Inkantation on July 07, 2017, 05:00:44 PM
and the reason i prefer tatl to midna is because, despite their superficially similar personalities, she's actually exactly the opposite of midna lol

tatl wants nothing to do with you except to taunt and thieve along with her worthless brother and the skull kid, so she acts as an active accomplice as you're knocked the fuck; out, robbed of your dearest belongings and turned into a wooden newt

and in the process of forcefully preventing you from pursuing the skull kid, she ends up getting separated from her partners in crime

and they don't even care lmfao

they don't wait a single second for her to catch up, and by the time you get through the door a minute later they're nowhere to be seen

her own worthless brother would rather follow the skull kid like a dog on a short leash than waste even a minute on reuniting with tatl

and now she's stuck with you, desperately begging for your forgiveness because she has no choice but to submit if she wants any help cuddledoods;

and as it dawns on her that she will be stuck with you for longer and then even longer than anticipated, she gradually softens to you throughout the game

in tp's case, you are broken into being midna's servant over the course of the game, and she treats you like a mere pet throughout

in mm, tatl is broken into being your servant over the course of the game, and she becomes your pet dog on a short leash

just as she deserves for introducing herself to you with assault giggle; giggle;

Idk, regardless midna is just more interesting to me.

Tatl just bugs me, and navi is devoid of anything interesting

You're points are valid, but this is just how I feel. You know, at least midna has a complex backstory. Not that tatl doesnt, i suppose but It helps for me.

Besides, midna and link become pretty much equal partners by the endgame.

Which, I guess, so does tatl...

Idk I just prefer midna

the big reason, which I am pretty sure you don't agree with, is the story. Besides me thinking its better, I really think the presentation adds a lot to it. The movement of the characters as they talk, and many interesting scenes in general.

The gameplay itself I feel is better. The dungeons are better (mostly).

The good music tracks stand out more to me than in ocarina.

tatl >> navi >> midna >>>> fi

midna is rude and domineering from the very moment she forcefully imposes herself into your life, using you as a mere vector to effect her own goals for like the entire first half of the game

and the reason i prefer tatl to midna is because, despite their superficially similar personalities, she's actually exactly the opposite of midna lol

tatl wants nothing to do with you except to taunt and thieve along with her worthless brother and the skull kid, so she acts as an active accomplice as you're knocked the fuck; out, robbed of your dearest belongings and turned into a wooden newt

and in the process of forcefully preventing you from pursuing the skull kid, she ends up getting separated from her partners in crime

and they don't even care lmfao

they don't wait a single second for her to catch up, and by the time you get through the door a minute later they're nowhere to be seen

her own worthless brother would rather follow the skull kid like a dog on a short leash than waste even a minute on reuniting with tatl

and now she's stuck with you, desperately begging for your forgiveness because she has no choice but to submit if she wants any help cuddledoods;

and as it dawns on her that she will be stuck with you for longer and then even longer than anticipated, she gradually softens to you throughout the game

in tp's case, you are broken into being midna's servant over the course of the game, and she treats you like a mere pet throughout

in mm, tatl is broken into being your servant over the course of the game, and she becomes your pet dog on a short leash

just as she deserves for introducing herself to you with assault giggle; giggle;
sounds like tatl was just getting what was coming to her

idk if this is unpopular but the enjoyability and general quality of every mega man game i've played (1-3) drops considerably once you beat all the robot masters

the sudden prominence of parts that require special items/rush items turns the game's focus from tight jumping and shooting to shitty resource managing. if there's guaranteed weapon power drops in a level and you fuck up after picking them up, then you might as well repeatedly kill yourself to start the section over and get those drops back. it's not fun. also, the wily castle bosses are usually very forgettable or poorly designed.

Title: Re: Unpopular Opinions: Vidya Game Edition
Post by: Nyerp on June 07, 2018, 10:24:00 AM
well, you'd kind of expect there to be a tough boss fight inside this ancient eldritch abomination that the game's been building up the whole time. instead you get an easy fight that serves more of a narrative purpose than a gameplay one. i like it, but i totally understand why most people don't.
Title: Re: Unpopular Opinions: Vidya Game Edition
Post by: Kalahari Inkantation on June 10, 2018, 12:26:37 PM
it's that exact subversion of the player's expectations that i think makes demon's souls's's's ending so effective

i think it should be pretty obvious that the real final boss is doppelganger allant at the end of boletaria, everything after that is basically playable exposition

but the point is to create a crystal clear contrast between the once incredibly powerful king allant at his height, and the literal slug that he has become since succumbing to the unfathomably corruptive power of souls

he hasn't just become weaker than he once was, he's become the weakest and most pitiful creature in the entire game, and you, the player, would be a complete fool to think that you can handle souls any better than he did should you, too, succumb to their temptation by choosing the bad ending

idk i love it lol, it just says so much without relying on text or cutscenes

it's a great part of the reason why i think demon's souls has BY FAR the best plot of any souls game, or bloodborne

You know, after playing Zelda more, I hate to say it, but botw is en route to becoming my least favorite zelda title.

Now THIS is an opinion I don't want to hear. >.<

could you provide an utmost generic, sanitized, spoiler-free explanation of why you are beginning to feel this way

as it's a zelda game, i'm pretty sure i already know the answer, but i just want to make sure
I can try

I'd still recommend you play it though, as I am most definitely in the minority here.

it's so unfortunate that you turned out to be completely correct about all of this

in fact, i may be even more bitter about botw than you are awdood;

i honestly think that dark souls 2 is the most difficult game in the trilogy, certain boss fights notwithstanding

and while i generally dislike the soul memory mechanic and have mixed feelings about enemy extinction, i do appreciate how those two systems work together in an attempt to make every single soul meaningful/valuable, and make the loss of souls all the more devastating

there aren't any consequences for losing souls in the other games, aside from the loss of the player's time

man, ALBW is so fuckin good

Quote from: YPrrrr on August 14, 2018, 12:36:59 PMYeah i thought it was just going to be bleh ALTTP again but it's really good

hot take: 95% of the reason botw is good is because alttp is good

i like albw but it's just waaaaaaaaaaay too conservative

it's basically just alttp in 3d + wall-merging gimmick

i was hoping it would greatly expound upon alttp's world rather just 3dify it in almost the exact form it appeared originally

if albw had come out five years after alttp rather than over two decades later, there would rightfully have been valid complaints about it being far too similar to alttp

i personally don't hate the new mechanics though lol, maybe i would call them a little shallow but there's nothing inherently wrong with them or the way they're utilized in albw imo

unless there's something really awful/annoying i've since forgotten about

Quote from: C.Mongler on August 15, 2018, 04:31:20 PMand terrible art

ehh

it's certainly not as æsthetically pleasing as the sprite-based zelda games are but albw's also not as ugly as i expected it to be based on early promo materials

i guess it has its own charm, but no denying that the 2d zeldas that appeared on the snes and gba are way better looking

this. i didn't like subspace, and i didn't really like world of light either. they're both just boring slogs.

personally, if it were me in charge, i'd try something that's sort of a mix of melee's adventure mode and smash ultimate's classic mode. character-unique adventures that are neither too long nor too short.

imo, "platforming" is not the actual problem with subspace. the actual problem is that most of subspace is simply running from the left to the right in boring, unimaginative, copy-pasted stages past a ton of boring, unimaginative, copy-pasted enemies.

in a game like smash bros., there's no real way to "standardize" the construction of a level. because every character you can play as is completely different. so as a result you get this boring generic stuff that just sort of fits every character.

so i really think character-specific adventures and challenges is the way to go. which smash ultimate does with its classic mode. and honestly? its classic mode is great. but!! the same ideas could be applied to a full adventure.

i don't entirely disagree, it IS very repetitive and i wish there was more variance in heat actions

but you can definitely mix it up a lot more than you're describing. sometimes switching between styles on the fly is actually a lot more effective than staying in one. and you also didn't mention weapons at all which have their own movesets and heat actions and actually make bosses way easier.

but yeah, combat in brawler games is always pretty repetitive for sure

the sudden prominence of parts that require special items/rush items turns the game's focus from tight jumping and shooting to shitty resource managing. if there's guaranteed weapon power drops in a level and you fuck up after picking them up, then you might as well repeatedly kill yourself to start the section over and get those drops back. it's not fun. also, the wily castle bosses are usually very forgettable or poorly designed.

i dunno if this is unpopular but i am begining to fucking loathe the walk-n-talk not-cutscene. the type where the game removes the ability to use any rapid movement mechanics and you and another NPC just walk slowly side-by-side until the conversation is complete, at which point you can move like normal again. every AAA game has them at this point, but just been on my mind having done my 60th walk-n-talk in god of war ragnorok lol. idk I guess they are easier to do than a traditional cutscene since you're leaving the framing of the scene up to the player n shit like that, but please can we just have normal cutscenes back at this point

Quote from: C.Mongler on December 12, 2022, 10:48:15 AMi dunno if this is unpopular but i am begining to fucking loathe the walk-n-talk not-cutscene. the type where the game removes the ability to use any rapid movement mechanics and you and another NPC just walk slowly side-by-side until the conversation is complete, at which point you can move like normal again. every AAA game has them at this point, but just been on my mind having done my 60th walk-n-talk in god of war ragnorok lol. idk I guess they are easier to do than a traditional cutscene since you're leaving the framing of the scene up to the player n shit like that, but please can we just have normal cutscenes back at this point

Hard agree

because i was tired of finding new weapons i wasn't going to use and new spirit ashes i was going to use and new ashes of war i wasn't going to use

After 63 hours, I think I've seen what the game has to offer. And according to the video essays I watched about the game, apparently I'm right considering the amount of repeat bosses and tedium the late game seemingly consists of.

I had fun, it's a great game, but I don't need more of this tbh

twilight princess has (much) better motion control swordplay than skyward sword does
Title: Re: Unpopular Opinions: Vidya Game Edition
Post by: C.Mongler on January 20, 2023, 04:28:11 AM
that's not even a hot take, that's just like saying a link to the past has better motion control swordplay in that it doesn't lol
Title: Re: Unpopular Opinions: Vidya Game Edition
Post by: Samus Aran on January 20, 2023, 06:30:06 AM
yeah i mean ultimately waggling is annoying but waggling to control an otherwise really good swordplay system (basically wind waker plus cool extra moves) is obviously better than skyward sword's convoluted forced shit

when you're using a gamecube controller, tp has the best swordplay in the series imo

i honestly didn't mind skywards goofy shit in the switch re-release with the non-motion controls

though using the non-motion controls had their own problems lol awdood;

but yeah TPs controls are essentially any sense of motion is mapped as a button press lol
