In an attempt to combat slowness I'm going to purge the PMs tomorrow night or over the weekend. This should remove ~18000 entries in the database which might help a bit.

Would clearing PMs speed up thread loading at all? I'd imagine SMF stores PMs in a separate table which is only accessed when actually viewing PMs.

think of scrolling through 16000 entries on page load to count a user's pms versus doing so for 1000.
realistically its not a huge difference in time taken (eg 5 vs 30ms ) but when its busy while the database is slow it is a large factor
