I know a few people are upset by the family smoking act and say we shouldn't be regulating the free market yaddayadda yadda.
Here's a bit of a spoiler. The act was passed because of the "free market".
Philip Morris put a lot of money into lobbying for that bill. Why? Their market isn't flavored cigarettes. Djarum Blacks and such was killing their profit margins.
Before complaining about the lack of a free market realize that it's uncontrolled corporation growth that lets a company grow so large they can pretty much purchase legislation to ban their competitor's prodcuts. akudood;

Uh, that body is long gone and sold the country into something it probably can't get itself out of. Regardless of who's actually in the senate and house, the lobbyists for the companies will pay them off.
I can tell you though, it wasn't restricting the growth of companies that did it.
But there were already regulations on the smoking industry so it wasn't really a free market.
