Title: Speedrunning
Post by: Samus Aran on July 27, 2018, 08:49:02 PM
Anyone here interested in speedrunning, either doing it yourself or watching speedruns?

It's something I've been mildly obsessed with lately. It all started when I discovered a Youtuber by the name of Summoning Salt. He's well-known in the speedrunning community for holding records in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, but he also posts really cool documentary-style videos on the progression of speedrun world records in various games. I was immediately hooked on his content. Here's the first one I watched, it's really well-made:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y99Wj-NStok

Anyway, I eventually watched his Super Metroid one, and that got me very interested in attempting runs of that game. For one thing, it's my favorite game of all time, and for another I was already somewhat knowledgeable about various sequence breaking exploits in the game. Thus far, I've managed to get down to 1hr36min in the any% category. Which is not anywhere near great, but I'm making progress. Last night I did nothing but practice speedrunning the Draygon fight for like two hours lmao. And I've got it down really well now, I think my current skill level on fighting him could shave off at least three minutes from an overall run. I'm shooting for about 1hr20min on my next run. Which would still only place me at...644th on the speedrun.com board for any%. There's a ton of submissions for this game and it's super competitive.

On a related note, I've been having fun watching all of the past Super Metroid races at GDQ. They're always so brutal, Phantoon ends a lot of runs.

Only game I ever really attempted speedrunning was Mega Man X.

My best time doing a 100% run was around 50 minutes.

I kinda wanna try to speedrun Ninja Gaiden, if possible.

i think speedrunning is so sick but i don't have the patience/dedication to do it
i think it'd be fun to run super mario world. i was at a party once and some dude was randomly speedrunning it and it blew my mind

SMW has a fantastic sr community. On speedrun.com it's the sixth most-played game.

Quote from: Snowy on July 28, 2018, 01:27:06 PMLike 5 years ago I tried speedrunning Hotline Miami. It was pretty fun but you gotta REALLY love the game or you'll get bored quickly.

yeah and certain games are made more fun to speedrun by having their own really good sr communities. there are many reasons i chose super metroid, including the fact it's my favorite game ever, the fact that it's really fun to sequence break, and perhaps most importantly because the community is so large and wonderful and there are so many great runners to watch/follow

Well, I'm back on this bullshit again. Taking a step away from Super Metroid for a bit though, and learning a beginner's 16-star route in Mario 64. Fun as hell. Trying to shoot for sub-40 minutes for now.

I know how to do all the tricks required, I just need to work on how quickly I can do them. Mips clip, BLJ, etc. I haven't even attempted to incorporate bomb clipping or owlless, tho.

I will probably be streaming attempts at this soon!

I'm so mad. Was easily on pace for less than 35 minutes but I got repeatedly fucked a particular star in Hazy Maze Cave that I really hate

remember to watch for rolling rocks

It's not that one, but you do get that one also.

The one I'm referring to is the one above the big hole in the ground in that same room. The "real" way to get it is by going through the maze. But if you triple jump into a wallkick correctly you can reach it. But I'm super bad at it, it's the one star I really need to practice.

yeah literally only edf 4.1 has any runs on sr.com

https://www.speedrun.com/Earth_Defense_Force_4.1_The_Shadow_of_New_Despair

and there's literally only one submitted co-op run, and two submitted solo runs

so be the change you want to see in the world, man. get to running

i would kind of hate to run it in that format especially since i never play on easy but i'm sure it would be fun

i bet i could beat those times with a couple attempts

tonight while streaming, we hit 31min boys

unfortunately tho i didn't have OBS or Twitch set to record anything, just stream. so i have no proof of the run, thus i didnt submit it.

it's ok tho, i'll just do a better run and submit that

making progress!

for 16 star emulator on speedrun.com, when this run is approved, it will be 822nd place. out of 1017. sooo not very good lmfao BUT i know i can do WAY better. this run had absolutely dreadful mistakes, including the absolute worst bowser fire sea attempts, and so many missed throws on bowser 3. will post video when it's ready.

I watch GDQs and RPGLimitBreak speed run marathons thats about it

I sometimes watch ThorW when he runs Dark Souls 3

I used to watch Cirno_TV too when he speedran games.

i'm an idiot

should've read this part of the rules earlier lmfao, now i gotta download an older version of pj64 in order to do runs and actually submit them

its ok though that 28min was kind of an embarrassing mess i'll do a better run and submit that

new route incorporating "cannonless" and "talon" stars. cannonless is the star you normally use a cannon for in womp's fortress, blasting away part of a wall. you can get it without the cannon by glitching a wall grab into the edge of the star contained in said wall. talon is the star held by the bird in shifting sand land. super quick star if you nail the timing right.

i'm slowly improving.

speaking of improving...just hours after the above time...

here it is, the first run where i actually feel like i didn't fuck up constantly. major room for improvement, but honestly? i'm fucking getting way better at this

like seriously more than three minutes off the other time DAMN

this one i will post the video for once it's uploaded

Thank you Nyerp!!!

https://youtu.be/8jZhydEdzXM

Here's the video. Two major things led to this run time: a solid Bowser Fire Sea run, including a successful left upper path (long jumping across the tiny ledge), and a Bowser Sky without any mishaps.

Other things that went well: Lakitu skip, bomb clip, cannonless on first try, somehow managing talon even when a few frames too slow (that fire saved me from falling)

Mishaps: slow tower due to missing a wallkick plus accidentally falling off due to accidentally touching the tip that makes you slide, slow owl due to not climbing high enough in the tree and then an accidental ledge grab, slow penguin due to all sorts of mistakes, slow start of Bowser Dark World due to missed input making me get burned, slow pyramid due to accidentally punches instead of jump kicks and a bad triple jump, slow reds due to bad long jump aim and being too slow on the puzzle itself, missing Mips clip once, somewhat slow BLJ glitch

General things I need to work on: general movement first and foremost, but also, I need to use faster, less safe strats for Hazy Maze Cave and Bowser Sky. I went SO slow on Sky because I was so scared of falling and ruining the run. And I gotta work on my Bowser throws of course.

I can see a 22min run being very achievable very soon! Someday I will hit <20!!

Title: Re: Speedrunning
Post by: Samus Aran on November 14, 2018, 11:58:40 PM
here's the thing though - super metroid is a really fucking hard speedrun. i would like to get back into it, but its difficulty as a speedrun game is a bit daunting and i'm having a lot of fun with mario rn
Title: Re: Speedrunning
Post by: Samus Aran on November 23, 2018, 09:44:41 AM
yooo brought that sm64 down to 23:01!! even with tons of mistakes (died twice in HMC lmfao and also fucked up talon star and bowser fire sea a little bit)

the key is consistency. getting the general movement and strats down to the point where, even if you fuck up a bit here and there, you can continue to improve your overall time

i've pretty much got the first three worlds down pat. bowser 1 is still a bit slow but it's because i'm not yet comfortable with riskier strats. shifting sand land is SUPPOSED to be really easy but somehow even though i can do both stars perfectly when practicing, i end up choking during runs and losing like 30 seconds. same with the one star in lethal lava land. i lose like 10 seconds there every time because of some stupid mistake. hazy maze cave is usually fine, i messed up a lot in it this time tho.

honestly the biggest problem is the backwards long jump glitch. i'm still not consistent with it. sometimes i get it fast, sometimes i don't, and it's tough for me to feel like there's much i can do about it.

son of a fucking bitch

i was on my best pace yet, an EASY 21:30 at worst. and who fucking completely choked on final Bowser? this guy. holy shit. almost an entire minute lost due to terrible throws. I EVEN ALMOST FELL OFF THE STAGE ONCE.

22:24. still my best time yet, but i'm SO mad i choked so bad after such an otherwise good run with only a couple mishaps.

now down to a sloppy 21:19

y'all it feels so good to actually be getting better at this lmao. still soooo trash at bowser stages tho

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVbbUcvwivA

here's the video

major time losses:

-slow and overly safe bowser level 1 (i'm still not very confident about this level), plus a few mistakes in it too
-completely fucking up lethal lava land red coins
-missed catching MIPS early, MIPS skip also somewhat slow
-as always, taking too long to do the BLJ staircases
-very slow bowser level 3. actually got to the point where i just gave up trying to do the wood blocks the fast way, and just rode the moving platform so as to not jeopardize my run even further

minor time losses:

-wallkick fuck up in whomp's tower (wild blue)
-triple jump bonk in whomp's tower (trying to get up to whomp). also mess up landing in the right spot after the boss fight.
-wallkick fuck up in whomp's tower (climbing the white tower)
-waste some time setting up wallkick angle in hazy maze cave
-wallkick fuck up in hazy maze cave (watch for rolling rocks)
-slow start to bowser fire sea, but this is only minor because i still make the cycle of the moving platforms

all in all, yeah it's pretty bad lmao. very sloppy. if i had a run that "felt" this good again, but with less bowser level mistakes, it could easily be under 20 min

so in addition to mario 16 star, i decided to pick up a more relaxing, longer run of a different game as well. dkc2. it's not a very oft-run game, tho it definitely has its own small community. i'm mostly interested in any% because it's really fun to blow through the first two worlds with warp barrels. now i just gotta learn some wrong warps and skips.

the old top melee player in WA (silentwolf, has retired due to hand problems) had some pretty high up times for dkc and dkc3 which i always thought was neat

they look like good games to run

lmao this thread is funny for me to look back at my old awful times

my current 16 star pb is 18:24, on console. i take speedrunning mario slightly more seriously now i guess, and stream it semi-regularly

and ive recently been working on 70 star. pb currently is garbage, at like 1:04:xx, but with my current skills i can definitely pretty easily get a sub 1 hour time if i get a good run going
Title: Re: Speedrunning

i also briefly took up super metroid speedrunning, and regularly do randomizer races of super metroid with my girlfriend (she is considerably better than me at rando, i'm only better at running the vanilla game)

here's my splits for super metroid. for the record, "hamburger" refers to the first power bomb pack, "mode 7" refers to phantoon being defeated, "gravy" refers to gravity suit, "g4" refers to entering the golden 4 statue room above tourian, and "babysitting" refers to getting grabbed by THE BABY a few rooms before the final boss with mother brain

but yeah, 1:06:20 is my super metroid pb. i don't take this game's speedrun quite seriously enough to push it much lower any time soon, but i might get back to it eventually.

oh also "kpdr" refers to the boss route. doing kraid, phantoon, draygon, and then ridley is basically the vanilla, intended route. but it's actually faster (and much harder) to do phantoon first. i aint doin that shit tho lmao
