This thread is inspired by my thoughts on DKCR: Tropical Freeze. The thing is, Returns was a huge hit. It was universally praised, and rightfully so. It was fantastic. But when Tropical Freeze was announced, it didn't get any hype at all. Hell, most people were disappointed that Retro was working on another platformer, let alone a DK one. Instead of, you know, a Metroid game to help us all get over Other M.
But honestly? Tropical Freeze is a better game than Returns, fixing nearly every nitpick I can think of (except that Rambi is still the only animal buddy). Yet nobody really seemed to care much.
I blame the lukewarm public reception on a few things. One is that it's a Wii U game, and simply put, the Wii U was a disaster. Second, it happened to come out at a time when 2D platformer retro revivals was now more common. So the initial appeal of something fresh and new just wasn't there. Third, Metroid fanboys are often pretty terrible, and their backlash against Retro for making this game in the first place instead of a new Metroid definitely helped shape the general video game media into something pretty antagonistic against this game.
It just really sucks that only a certain sect of people really gave a shit about this game. Because it fucking rules.
And you know, likewise, I'm going to mention another Wii U game here. Pikmin 3. Where the fuck was the hype for this? I heard almost nothing about it anywhere. Pikmin and its sequel were a big fucking deal on the Gamecube. But somehow, another entry just didn't really seem to make waves at all. Again, this is probably due to the fact that the Wii U was, well, the Wii U. Granted, this one isn't as offensive to me as DKCRTF's treatment, because Pikmin 3 is genuinely not as good as it could've been, 2 was quite a bit better. But still. A new entry to an important franchise should've generated more hype.
Metroid Fusion was a damn good successor to Super but got (understandably) overshadowed by Prime, and then later by Zero Mission, so I feel like nobody ever talks about it. I'm sure plenty of people played it but it feels forgotten to me.
Earth Defense Force
Somehow monster Hunter is huge and edf remains a niche
Mad World is one of my favorite platinum games and top 5 wii games yet no remaster y bb madood;
Mega Man 11 doesn't deserve rapturous praise or anything, but it kind of feels like most people just ignored it. Capcom's nonexistent marketing didn't help, but I think too many people got fixated on some unimportant shit (the game's 2.5D instead of 8-bit and Mega Man's running animation isn't perfect I guess (??????)) and refused to play a good game.
megaman 11 is like the most accessible one in the entire franchise, i kind of love it
it can be tough as dick if you want to play it normally, or it has the means to make it way more lenient if you suck ass like i do

Gravity Rush 1 and 2.
I still think once the bugs were patched out that Mass Effect Andromeda is the second best entry in the series behind ME2. I had a ton of fun with it

I'm probably alone in this, but Pikmin 3 is actually the main reason I got a Wii U. I had been ignoring it until then because it had absolutely nothing I cared about (yet another NSMB game? that's it?), but Pikmin 3 was pretty important to me and worth getting the console for. Mario 3D World coming only a few months later didn't hurt, but Pikmin 3 is definitely why I didn't want to wait until then to grab a Wii U.
The most underrated Wii U game of all, in my opinion, is Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. It was a pretty niche release even by Wii U standards despite being a Kirby game and a worthy successor of the well-received Canvas Curse. The odd choice of hardware fundamentally held it back, but I'd be surprised if it ever gets a rerelease on another system. It also has imo one of the best Kirby OSTs, roughly tied with Robobot.
