What is your opinion on transsexuals? It seems that lots of people hate them to extreme amounts for religious reasons.
Forget the rest of the stuff I had here since I'm not lying anymore. I am one and it's pretty well known by now.
I see nothing wrong with transsexuals. Hopefully, we'll develop the technology required to perform seamless sex changes some day.
I could never imagine myself getting it carried out, but I can understand others feeling they aren't the "right gender." So long as the person knows they're making a presumably irreversible decision and still want to go forth, let them do it. If it makes them happy along with the doctor getting paid, it's fine.

I dont mind them, but it seems a bit stupid. Since majority of transexuals are ugly and mostly outcasts.
There have been documented cases where a guy was born with all female hormones, so he was considered a female in a males body

Until sex changes are SEAMLESS, they'll have to deal. Otherwise, I probably would have gone YEARS ago.
I think it's weird, but what ever floats your boat.
I'm friends with a girl named Liz who prefers to be called Griff and i=s actually dating a guy, though a gay guy. She wants to be considered a boy on all counts. I like her. :P Not for that, and I don't like her any less because of it, she's just a nice person all around. :3

What is your opinion on transsexuals? It seems that lots of people hate them to extreme amounts for religious reasons... but there are plenty of atheists here so I'm wondering what everybody's opinion on it is.
A transsexual is a person that is born one particular sex but mentally thinks of themselves or want to be the opposite sex, and often get reassignment surgery and other things to actually become the opposite gender. They can be of any sexual orientation; some transsexuals are considered homosexual after surgery and hetero before and others are vice-versa. Typically they wouldn't consider sexual intercourse as a factor towards their decision.
From a bit of looking around the internet, I found a site about it written from the viewpoint of one (http://transsexual.org/)
Meh, I'm not so good at making extensive first posts of a thread in Serious Discussion. I hope this was enough.
Before somebody asks, no, I am not a transsexual at all. I'm fully content with being (and am glad to be) a girl and I'm now the same sex as I was when I was born. My sudden slight interest is for a different reason. navi;
Well I see nothing wrong with transexuals, it's their choice and nobody elses. If they feel like they're trapped in a body that they don't want to be in then they should be able to change.

I said his logic (in general, not applied to the specific situation) was flawed, yes... and explained why I felt that way. And in order for people to be happy, by the way, there will always be a conflict of interest, so no, that type of thinking won't work.
Then I seperately explained my feelings on the subject, and I successfully did not compare them to murderers.

Yes but that makes others unhappy. Sure some things will make some people unhappy but if it's not affecting you (like somebody being a transexual) then I don't see why somebody should have a problem with it.
Some things will make people unhappy if it is affecting other people. The world isn't going to be perfect but if something isn't affecting you why should you deny it of others?

BUT WHO IS HURT BY A PERSON CHOOSING TO GET A SEX CHANGE?
If you're going to compare the situation of their happiness to some one becoming happy by robbing a bank list some victims.
The people hurt by the robbery are those who work at the bank, the people present at the bank, and those who had their money in the bank.
The people hurt by the murder are the victim, and their family.
Who is hurt by a person changing their sex? Your answer wasn't an answer for that. You answered for who is hurt by religious zealots.
You two, take the arguments outside.
After remembering some events on an IRC server where so many were brainwashed, the line for transexuality can be fairly easily blurred. Who can say they're truly transsexuals? Not many men, from what I've seen, unfortunately. In my case, it's a wish that that would cure my diabetes through some fucked up miracle, really. Nothing much else, and for that to have worked, I'd have had to have been born female. I ain't.
For people hurt, to be more specific, often it's the family, if we want to get to MAJORITY values. Even if they say it's okay, nobody likes change they're not really informed about, and since this is, like homosexuality, rarely discussed until it's very late, sometimes TOO late.

I don't have a problem with them. It's just I think they're weird and ugly.
It would be kind of awkward being around them at first, but I'd never discriminate against them. They probably get enough crap as it is.
Wouldn't transsexuals hurt someone they're dating if they didn't tell the person they were transsexual? O_0
For example, a woman gets surgery to become a man and ends up looking the part and starts dating a woman who has no reason to believe this person was once female. If the woman eventually brings up the subject of having sex after they've fallen in love and the transsexual admits that they/he doesn't have a penis (since that's what the woman wants), couldn't that potentially destroy the relationship and emotionally hurt the woman?
I mean, that would be a really shady tranny, but I'm sure it's happened before. I don't mean to cause controversy, I just wanted to show an example of a transsexual hurting someone.

one has every right to prefer a gender pronoun that does not match their biological sex
society has every right to completely ignore that preference

when i worked in student affairs at my college and we had to take like a whole day of training on respecting people's preferences and being sensitive to them we were instructed to never make any assumptions, so we had to refer to everyone in gender neutral terms.
i remember someone asked when if it was dead obvious and the instructor told us that it's not really obvious and it's our perception or whatevs lol. they might consider themselves genderfluid, nonbinary, etc. and may not be comfortable with those terms.
i never went through the trouble really and just went with my gut when dealing with transgender students (i only ever dealt with like 3) and i did once mislabel someone but they didn't even correct me, my friend did after we left lol.
but i agree with you. passing is sadly necessary. you can't actually be too angry with someone for naturally misgendering you if you don't represent the gender identity you wish to be associated with. i'd say most of the time it's unintentional when it happens. i've taken issue with how younger "tumblr culture" generations seem to be quick to attack those who ARE misinformed or uneducated, which undoubtedly fails to help their cause at all.

this is just unbelievably inefficient
the overwhelming majority of the population identifies as whatever their biological sex is, so it's insane that you would be trained to pretend as if that somehow isn't the case
in fact, you run the risk of causing
more offense overall by assuming the average person identifies differently than the way they present
what exactly were the "gender-neutral terms" they insisted you use myface;

it's good to know there are still reasonable people still left in this world
a reasonable transperson who gets misgendered almost certainly knows why that happens (ie not fully passing) and shouldn't take offence, a simple 'i'm actually a girl/guy' 'oh sorry i'll keep that in mind' should be enough
Quote from: Himu on July 10, 2017, 03:22:53 AM

wholly agreed
there probably aren't too many people out there who go about their days deliberately misgendering transfolk for fun, and even if such people did exist, they could never misgender the ones who passed sufficiently lol
Quote from: Himu on July 10, 2017, 03:22:53 AMi've taken issue with how younger "tumblr culture" generations seem to be quick to attack those who ARE misinformed or uneducated, which undoubtedly fails to help their cause at all.
it's almost uncanny how correct this entire post is
by which i mean completely
tumblrites get emotional and attack those they disagree with, which naturally has the effect of causing reasonable people to simply tune tumblrites out
or even do exactly the opposite of what tumblrites demand out of spite lol
it's just so utterly counterproductive to insult and attack a person who might seem ignorant or disagree, because all that ever accomplishes is polarizing the debate rather than cultivating a mutual understanding
also you could replace "tumblrites" with "humans" in those last few sentences and it remains entirely true lol
Oh this was like about 3 years ago lol. but i believe it's probably not too uncommon in a lot of colleges across the US now. maybe not in like texas idk. student affairs is basically a walking tumblr department though honestly.
by neutral terms i remember we either had to just always refer to them using their name or using "they". worst case was introduce ourselves like "hi i'm haley, i like cats, and my preferred pronouns are she/her! what's your name and pp???" which sounds completely ridiculous as you can imagine lol. none of us really followed those rules after the seminar though.
but yes!! i agree with you completely tec. and i used to think it was probably just a tumblr thing, but i've seen it increasingly all around me as well. especially with younger people. the good intentions to inform are there, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. sure, there are a lot of ignorant, hateful, and judgmental people still left in the world, but there are still a lot of people who just aren't informed or who have no experience dealing with a certain subject. why be another or the first negative experience to add to their collection when you can instead be an example or the exception to their rule?

I just meant why deprive someone of something that makes them happy isn't a good enough reason to support something. Which was successfully rebutted by somebody that whatever makes people happy but doesn't deprive others of happiness - which is a better way to phrase it.
I didn't mean it in terms of trans people I was just arguing the logic behind his justification which he amended to live and let live essentially.

On topic, I don't see why anyone would care if other people do something that has no effect on anyone else.
Even in younger people they can just use hormone blockers to prevent puberty from happening and if the kid changes their mind they stop the blockers and experience puberty normally.
My younger brother (ftm) recently came out as trans. Of course he waited to move to Hawaii before coming out to my parents.
Smart kid.
The most interesting observation from this thread is Bluaki's OP saying she's "not lying anymore" since she had already identified as trans and had previously posted that she was female.
I think at this point most of us would have never interpreted it as lying as being a transwoman is being a woman but previously it seems that most us missed that point.
