Title: Tracking the ISIL

The ISIS at its core represents a brutally violent attempt by jihadists to redraw the unstable borders of the Middle East, made possible by the power vacuum left in Iraq by the removal of Saddam Hussein and the political incompetence of neighboring Syria.

the us and its allies became officially involved last week with the commencement of airstrikes against isis strongholds

"'ISIS, the perpetrators of atrocities and the groups that hoist the banner of religion seem to be raising their weapons in sync with Washington, and fight the US verbally, but in practice are killing their enemies. Is this a coincidence, or was it planned ahead of time,' the Palestinian official daily Al Hayat Al Jadida pondered."

yeah but even if every single muslim in france were sympathetic to isis that wouldn't account for that extra 6%

and as the article indicates, within the muslim demographic itself, it's mostly young dumbasses who are exhibiting isis apologism, and probably because it's the absolute edgiest thing a braindead youngster of islamic faith with no knowledge of the world outside their comfortable little bubble could possibly do

i'm sure they exist, but people like that are an incredibly tiny minority lol

i blame the abundance of painfully naive and impressionable young minds who know absolutely nothing aside from their own dissatisfaction with """western""" society brought about by real or perceived inequity against them who see groups like isis, realize that it strikes fear into the hearts of the western world, and rationalize that 'if the west is bad, this must therefore be good' because they want to put their faith in some alternative

that pretty much covers extreme feminists, muslim radicals, braindead extreme leftist and rightist non-muslims, etc. who might find themselves sympathizing with isis because it's the antithesis of the """west""" with which they're so dissatisfied

also, i find the british media's 'is' nomenclature even more infuriating than the isil/s [hint: the s is wrong] debate.  islamic state just sounds too vague and could potentially be applied to any muslim-majority country akudood;
Title: Re: Tracking the ISIL

isis may not be technically correct anymore, but the group became well known in the media and among average western citizens while it called itself isis, which has caused it to become the far more common term in vernacular and as such it will probably stick around until the group's been dismantled

not to mention that the s in isis actually stands for al-sham, and it's easier to pronounce that 'isil' lol

'islamic state' could refer to any of the handful of states prefixed with 'islamic state', but that was probably a deliberate move by isi* to cause the rest of the world to conflate it with all of islam

mosuls coming along but i dont really understand their strat. theyre cupping up at the bottom but barely making any progress at the top so is it some kind of mish mash flim flam smothering idk. doesnt make sense but it is the iraqi army so you know.

once they get mosul, which looks good, they can pretty easily push isis out of iraq, so theyd just be iss, which is pretty astronautical.

then the question of, lol the kurds are controlling a third of the country and they have been for 3 years now...

assad almost has aleppo. all told, pretty good. obama's strat is coming together, as horrible as it was.
