Title: Mormonism.
Post by: Det in F♯ Major on August 11, 2009, 01:16:25 PM
So, while at camp, I befriended a girl who recently revealed she belonged to the LDS Church. I'm not sure really what Mormons are all about, but I know they have a bad reputation.
Why? Is it for good reason? Or is it just bias like people say Catholics or Jews are insane as well?

Please give actual fact/detail, not just "OMG MORMONS R FAGZ!#!#!$1!!$@!!$!@$"

1) They think that you have to tithe to go to Heaven.
2) No coffee, drugs, or tobacco
3) They think that when we die, our spirits are separated from our bodies and if we were good they go to â,"spirit paradise.â, If we were bad they go to â,"spirit prison.â, The spirit world exists as a place for spirits to go while awaiting the second coming.
4) They have an official prophet and consider anything he says to be official canon.
5) They think that Jesus visited the Americas to minister to the Indians.
6) They don't believe in the Trinity
7) Any worthy male can be given the priesthood and is given specific duties. Black people were not allowed to have the priesthood until 1978. Females are not allowed to have the priesthood.
8) They believe in three different heavens.
9) They think that murder is unforgivable.
10) Mormons believe that God created multiple worlds and each world has people living on it. They also believe that multiple Gods exist but each has their own universe. We are only subject to our God and if we obtain the highest level of heaven we can become gods ourselves.

Like Zach said, they have/had very racist and sexist doctrines.

Joseph Smith himself engaged in Polygamy and the church condoned such for a while.  There are still a few sects that practice it, marrying off minors to adult men.

Like Jehovah's Witnesses and other hyperreligious cults, they engage in shunning of people who leave the cult.

They were an offshoot of the Mormon Church if I recall correctly.

Mormonism overall is pretty stupid. But like all religions, I'm not going to judge followers by it. I don't know any mormons who are serious about it. They grow up with it and all, but they don't seriously think about the weird shit Joseph Smith preached. Like any religion: if you have it, good for you. Just don't be a crazy fucker about it.

Well, the entire religion was founded by some "prophet" (read: con-man) from the 19th century. They believe in weird shit like the Native Americans being the descendants of a lost tribe of Israel, which is just fucking crazy. They're probably the goofiest sect of Christianity.

South Park devoted an episode to Mormonism that explains how it was founded. I recommend watching it (http://www.southparkstudios.com/clips/104253) if you're interested. Full episode here (http://www.southparkstudios.com/episodes/103933/?autoplay=false)

According to a Mormon I argued with, Jesus is Quetzalcoatl and the Big Bang is a load of bullshi.

So does that mean that they believe that Jesus was a bird?

I generally try to educate myself on shit before I make a judgement about it, so I read "Under the Banner of Heaven", a surprisingly objective take on mormonism by Jon Krakauer. I knew it was a redneck religion, I just didn't understand to what extent until reading the book.

Most mormons are very nice people. And then, you have the fundamentalists (or so they like to call themselves) who use their religion as a totally illegitimate excuse to enjoy regular sex with, and emotionally scar, their young children.

South Park's episode on Mormonism tells you everything you need to know. I took a class on it and had quite a few friends who are Mormon before I even saw that, and when I did it was scarily accurate. You should watch it.

 It basically has it's stupid rules like any religion does, and tries to scare you or you'll burn in hell forever.  akudood; I can't see how people judge other religions by calling them stupid and wrong and can't see the irony in doing so.  akudood;

Like 3 of my friends are mormon, but they're not necessarily practising mormon. But just like the South Park episode they have a game/No TV night.

I grew up in a very Mormon town.  They all had a game/no TV day too... Except it was so extreme, they couldn't have friends over that day.  Plus the first Sunday of every month they had to fast.

My friends tried to convert me in high school, so I talked to the missionaries and went to their church for a while.  I almost laughed when we got into the discussion of heaven...  And when I finally learned about the different worlds, I stopped going completely.

HOWEVER!

The weekly activities were fun, they had strong family values, and the place made me feel good.  I think that's how they suck people in, but the beliefs are nuts.

...

My first girlfriend was Mormon, and by the time our relationship was over, she had left the church.... Now she is completely dissowned by her Mormon family, but she says it's for the better.

Cool story bro. I'd never go to a mormon church, sounds cult-ish to me.

People make fun of mormons because somehow their ridiculous inception stories and main tenets are less ridiculous than those of the mormon's. Do I believe that god (or one of god's thirds, or wholes depending on THE GREAT MYSTERY (I'm sorry my family's catholic I dislike it) ) screwed mary without taking her virginity to make a semi-divine being, whose rituals of rememberance are eating his flesh and drinking his blood? No. Do I believe Jesus led a group of very devout people to America, disguising the fact that Mormon's popped in the Second Great Awakening and tried to form their own political entity in Nevada? No.

I don't know the dogmatic subtlties of mormanism, so I can't really differentiate it (or claim its superiority) to any other organized religion (besides Unitarinism, of course). I don't mind them. I don't mind catholics either.

I always find it odd when my Christian friends go "lol those stupid scientologists and mormons, they're so stupid for believing in a false and obviously fake religion."

Most of the time out of courtesy and my anti-interventionist mentality (well, sometimes) I don't say anything; but other times I remind them that they believe that the known universe is 6000 years old and that they follow a religion that says that the Earth is flat and that the sky is a firmament.  Although...most of my friends aren't as philosophical as I am in many respects.  And they're happy with the way that they live their lives, which I can't say for myself.  So sometimes I feel like if they believe something that doesn't harm people, it's fine with me.

There was a Mormon guy on The Real World Brooklyn. It never really said anything about it other than that they weren't allowed to have sex unless they were married. He believe in that hardcore. I think he was gay too, secretly of course.
