'does the curtain match the drapes'
I just don't get it. befuddlement
aren't curtains and drapes the same thing
It's supposed to be does the carpet match the drapes n_u
lmao tec
i actually hate this phrase (it's a """pet peeve""", so to speak)
how did this ever come to mean 'minor annoyance', and what do pets have to do with it
I really feel like the people that purposefully say, 'I could care less', strive to annoy people.

christ lol myface;
"you can't compare apples and oranges"
like... yeah i can stfu
And I do mean it figuratively as well. When I hear people using this expression it's often for things I'd have no problem comparing.

yeah this has never resonated w me either lol
it's a great example of a thought-terminating cliche (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thought-terminating_clich%C3%A9)
here's the opposite
"i could care less" is actually totally valid and makes sense for what it's trying to convey. simply the act of caring doesn't mean you care very much at all. expressing how much you care by saying that technically you could care less is brutally dismissive. like, i'm capable of caring less but it would be difficult
not sure what everyone's beef is
not a fan of "believe you me"

yeah literally wtf does this even mean lol
yeah so fun fact i never quite learned grammar and have no idea what that means either LOL

If a trans man gives birth would you call him a mother?
Statistically, it's a marginal case but the whole dialogue right now is about normalizing the marginal for the sake of inclusivity both in terms of social acceptance and, by extension, legal protections.
alright folx, boyahpill me on this
Are "trans-man" and "mother" mutually exclusive? I don't see why they should be. huhdoodame;
The biological role one plays as a """birth-person (https://youtu.be/_bhaVOdd3jQ?t=17)""" is mother. One can still be a man for all other intents and purposes and also be a biological mother. I genuinely don't get why the word "mother" needs to be euphemismized here. It does not somehow invalidate the existence of transmen. befuddlement

Sometimes colloquial definitions are inaccurate. Tomatoes are considered vegetables, but are biologically fruit. Many "berries," such as strawberries, are not berries at all, while bananas and eggplants are.
If you're speaking strictly biologically, sure, but culturally I don't think it holds up.
I've never really thought about it but you asked so that's my impression.
-when, exactly, to use "the"
Although by now I have spoken American for literally decades, it feels like this somehow still eludes me on occasion. befuddlement
funny you mention that, this is something native french speakers can struggle a bit with when they start learning english because in french you use le/la pretty much every time
i'm sure there's many other examples but i can only think of one rn, when you present someone by their title:
"this is the doctor gibbings" (voici le docteur gibbings)
putting it in english sounds awkward
NOT putting it in french sounds awkward
