Title: Windows 10
Post by: Hiro on July 30, 2015, 10:24:03 PM
Got it yesterday, still playing around with it.
Looks very nice, and seems like a lot of useful new features were added, but there are weird graphical bugs here and there (like small icons on the Start menu get cropped/shifted to the right) and it seems to freeze up and stutter a lot more than 8 ever did, and I think in some ways its more confusing to use than 8, the way things seem to be randomly hidden/separated between both a Settings app as well as the traditional Control Panel.
Also Steam keeps trying to apply and reapply the same update over and over

yes! I just installed it and I think Windows explorer keeps freezing up on me. And my taskbar is a lot of times unusable.

I might end to eventually doing a clean install I when I get some of my stuff backed up.

Now I just have to install it on my desktop. Might hold off on that for a little bit though.

I liked that at the bottom of that page (at least for new) it had a bunch of ads to buy windows 10 on Amazon.

And I guess my start menu/button isn't working. But maybe if I keep restarting my computer things will start working because now at least the icons for Microsoft edge and the store are showing up where I have them pinned on the taskbar when previously they weren't.

Alright, I guess it's more or less working now after a trip to safe mode and then sticking the boot setting back to what I thought was default. And a few more restarts.

Though right clicking on my pinned stuff on the taskbar does nothing.

And I think everything on my laptop works except for Cortana.

i truly despise the arbitrary name change from "programs" to """apps""" and the inclusion of the intrusive and wholly unnecessary """app store"""

the word """app""" was popularized by apple and denotes a subcategory of programs designed to provide basic quasi-desktop functionality to early low-power 'smart' mobile devices which at one point would have been incapable of running the more taxing programs typically found on pcs

i don't want mobile pollution on a desktop os, why change nomenclature that was previously perfectly fine

i swear to dog, windows is no better than android sometimes, with its shameless and tearful wails of 'we are absolutely desperate for the apple market (but don't quite understand what makes apple so popular) !!'
(man, imagine how i would have felt about windows 8)
i am so far extremely impressed with windows 10's memory management efficiency O_0

i did some basic preliminary tests with known ram whore chrime and the results were impressive, i had over 100 tabs of varying resource intensiveness running simultaneously and my ram usage never exceeded 57% (of a total 8gb)

with windows 7 i would have been between 80-98% before the 100 tab mark and my pc would have started relying on virtual memory and everything would slow to a near unusable crawl until some ram was freed

a mere 8gb of ram is now closer to sufficient for me again happydood;

maybe i just need to clean install my os more often, lol

i was worried at fist too because windows 10's base idle memory usage seems slightly higher than 7's, but my concerns have been partly alleviated for now

i also experienced a high degree of stuttering and freezing in the immediate aftermath of the initial installs (both the straight upgrade and the clean install), which worried me, but it seems to have cleared up substantially after a few hours of use, for now it feels pretty swift and stable

as for my hardware/driver progress, most everything seems to be up and running properly........ except for my fingerprint scanner saddood;

i can't seem to find any drivers that'd get it working on windows 10, so i guess it'll remain dead for now :'(

speaking of hardware, i can't make proper use of cortana because my in-built mic spontaneously died on me some time ago

i did test her out using an external mic, and while she's neat, it's not worth the inconvenience of having to have an external mic plugged in at all times

ah well, she's nadella's personal data miner anyway sourgrapesdood;

pretty much just one last thing to test............. once steam finishes with those downloads in a few days at least

so not only do both fallout 3 and skyrim miraculously work

i actually got a significant performance boost of about 10-15 fps on average in skyrim lol sillydood;

i had never once seen skyrim's frame rate get any higher than 32ish when staring into a wall on a good day with windows 7, but yesterday i was outdoors staring into the distance at volkihar balcony and it never dipped below 40 lol, sometimes it was even as high as 60 (both indoors and out)

with fallout it's harder to quantify any gains (if indeed there were any) because it pretty much always ran at about 50-60fps in windows 7, and its performance now seems at least equivalent
perhaps that 60fps is a bit more consistent with 10 but i'd have to play more to get a real feel for what if anything has changed

between this and the aforementioned greatly improved ram efficiency: windows 10/10, would upgrade again
well ignoring those virtually inescapable privacy issues and the needless appification of everything, smtbh

i think it was benjamin franklin himself who said that those who trade liberty for performance gains in skyrim and an improved loodthing consumption experience deserve neither, and he was right
now for the hardest part: getting my ps3 controller running in a post-motioninjoy world smth;

oh well, i can live without it, for windows 10 it's a sacrifice i'm willing to make

The $15 fee is way too high (especially for something that feature-incomplete), but Microsoft really does have to pay extra to give people a DVD (or Blu-Ray) decoder, thanks to the silly world of codec licensing fees.

the codecs for widely-distributed media like this really should be free

though even beyond that, the whole it's tied to upgrading from 7/8 and if you do a clean install or reinstall 10 then you'll lose the dvd player. (Not that there's not better free alternatives)

I only just installed the Windows 10 update last night when I went to bed, then after I woke up this morning, I tried it out for a whole 5 minutes before deciding there was stuff I needed to do in Linux and rebooted sillydood;

In my short time with trying out Win10 for the first time, I think it so far seems like a nice improvement over 8.1 and 7, and of course the first thing I did was remove that Cortana search bar which takes up like a third of the taskbar.

I finally figured out why Internet Explorer still exists: to be used for local management of Microsoft software with web portals. so you don't leave the microsoft product realm.

The worst change in Win10 is the impossible to disable automatic reboot for updates.

You can adjust the time but you can't disable it overall. 8 at least gave you a few days warning but 10 just shuts down overnight.

It is really annoying because i have a music server running on my desktop and it means if I go away for a few days I risk losing access to all my music  akudood;

it's more of forced reboots without warning that is the problem.

Win8 did it right by warning you several days ahead of time before actually forcing it

How about this: minor updates shouldn't even require a full system reboot akudood;

It's entirely possible for pretty much every system update to apply in-place without a reboot. I still think the biggest problem with Windows's kernel is the atrocious file locks system that essentially doesn't let more than one program open any file at the same time.

Yes, I have an AMD R9 270X, but no, I don't use Windows nearly enough to notice major issues like that.

Ever since Win10 released, I've used it like twice. I believe it prompted me to update my video drivers one of those times, which is fair enough because I'd expect AMD to update the drivers to a newly released OS relatively often.

welli finally installed windows 10 for myself (after doing many installations and templates for customers)

i have to say this is the first Windows version that seems nice to use. they took a lot of 'nice things' from 'other operating systems'. i think they now have the any-device usability thing done better than apple. websites looks nicer on windows 10
virtual desktops are really nice and one of the main reasons i haven't used Windows for work up til now.

I installed it on a 2015 macbook which makes it even nicer. it's a serious possibility to main on mac+win10 rather than os x. but ultimately I still have to default to OS X for security reasons  madood;

now what i really want is Server 2016, so i can create windows 10 desktops deployed as server 2016 images  bassir;

The issue for a forced reboot is that I use my desktop as my music server, which means if I'm away from home and can't schedule an update, it will restart and I lose access to the server since Subsonic doesn't seem to actually work until I log in, even though it's running as a local system account.

might be java fuckery.
