reasonings, pleasonings
america is one thing
eurasia is one thing
africa gets to be its own thing because of toto
australia
antarctica

same
If Africa gets to be its own thing, I see no reason why you'd combine the Americas
when toto writes a hit song about the continent of south america then we can talk
until then america is conjoined via panama and no man made canal can convince me otherwise.
continents are a spook
it's all connected underwater
round earth is a spook

Africa is also conjoined via the Suez peninsula, and a man made canal shouldn't change that either.
continents that are barely conjoined are separate enough in my book. so africa is its own thing, and the americas are their own things.
but eurasia makes a lot of sense, i've never really understood the need to separate europe from western asia.
so my preferred model would definitely be that particular six-continent one.
on a semi-related note, can we someday come up with a better name than "south america" and "north america?" i understand that "america" was initially intended to just be a name for the western hemisphere in general, the new lands discovered by european explorers...but "america" is far too often just shorthand for our country these days, so the whole naming system seems misleading. either we rename the continents or rename our country.

a man made hit #1 single does however

srsly, how lazy of cartographers to name two enormous and very clearly distinct landmasses "america"
anyway i call dibs on the name america for america
the rest of north and south america will have to find some other title

The Ural and Caucasus mountains are generally used to define the border and you know this
But then how many sub continents are there?

the what now
i don't see either of those geographic features on either of those maps
what i do see, however, are giant isthmuses like suez and panama, and island continents like australia and antarctica

also, I don't know how clear it was, but africa was technically a part of both the Asian and European continents
It just works
india (by which i mean the geographic region, not the country) has its own discrete tectonic plate
its boundary with the rest of eurasia is the himalayas, a tremendously more impressive and renowned mountain range than the pitiful ural molehills
and india's (by which i mean the geographic region, not the country) population is also over TWO TIMES the size of europe's
So explain to me why Europe, with its pitiful molehill boundaries, half the population, and no separate tectonic plate, gets to be its own continent while India (by which I mean the geographic region, not the country) doesn't. Go on. :|

Agreed. We have
at least as valid a claim to the horribly defined title "continent" as Europe does. srsly
