GUIDE TO LINUX

[stupid slogan here]

What is Linux?
Linux is a free Unix-type operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers around the world. Developed under the GNU General Public License , the source code for Linux is freely available to everyone. Click on the link below to find out more about the operating system that is causing a revolution in the world of computers.

In other words, it's the best replacement for the shitty operating system you people know as "Windows". If you're running Mac OS X, you're free to go.

Why should I get Linux?
Shut the fuck up, you retard. This isn't even a valid question.

GET IT, OR DIE.

Okay, Okay... How do I get Linux?
Well, I'm glad you asked.

Linux actually has several different operating systems to it; these operating are called Linux distributions -- or in short, Linux distros. There are many Linux distros, but  since you're probably new to Linux, I suggest you try out Ubuntu. Ubuntu is one of the more... user-friendly Linux distro (or so they claim). Now, there are many ways to installing Linux, but the best way (if you're trying out Ubuntu) is Wubi. Wubi allows you to install Ubuntu without partitioning your hard drive (something many new people don't wanna do).

I want to install via Wubi. Now...?
Installing Wubi is fairly easy... if you're not a total retard, that is.

1. Go to the official Wubi site.
2. Download the Windows-based installer (click download).
3. Go to the official Ubuntu download page.
4. Check the "check here if you need the alternate desktop CD. This CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer" box and click "start download".
5. Make sure you download the file to the same folder you downloaded the Wubi installer to.
6. Run the wubi-installer (by opening the file you downloaded in the second step).
7. Specify your preferences. Make sure you know the login information (username and password).
8. If you're not sure what to set as the "Installation Size"--just put 6GB... or if you're running low on gigs--5GB.
9. Click "install".
10. When the installer is finished, restart your computer.
11. Right before you think the Windows boot screen will show up, you should get a screen that asks you which OS you want to boot into. Chose Ubuntu.
12. Go through the setting, if you're not sure on something--just leave the default.
13. Wait for the actual installation to finish.
14. Your computer should restart and you may now boot into Ubuntu.
15. Enjoy.

Something went wrong... what now?
Just try the Ubuntu Forums. You may also ask me--but I doubt I'll know how to fix your problem.

I like Ubuntu
I knew you would.

How do I uninstall Linuxi
If you're that much of a pussy, and want to uninstall Ubuntu you may uninstall it by going to the control panel and opening "Add or Remove Programs".

The rest is pretty much self-explanatory.

WAIT, I WANT TO INSTALL UBUNTU THE HARDER WAY
There are many guides to this. I suggest you follow one of them.

I agree.

Agree to the thread, I mean.

Daddy

I was the first one to use Wubi here.  educate;

I'm having problems finding my wireless card drivers. Once I find them I'll be on Ubuntu constantly.

Mac OS X and true Unix systems are far greater than anything else.

Hate to say it... but even Internet Explorer is greater on Windows than Firefox.

It sure as hell wasn't better on the 2002 HP Pavilion I was using.
That computer was pretty kickass when it came out in 2002 though.
80gig HDD with 512 RAM, pretty damn good for 5 years ago.
