I would've argued that zero suit was less sexualized than the bikini thinh, but clearly that argument is moot now

Fan works really don't matter in this discussion though

Oh yes they do. akudood;

Ok look you can't legitimately argue that my Samus baby Metroid unbirthing MS Paint art I made back in 2004 has any real indication of my own (or the fanbase's) ideas about Samus's sexuality

lol

but srsly they actually are extremely relevant because:

1. fanworks are difficult to avoid if you're a gamer who also happens to be an avid internet user
2. fanworks can often serve as very clear evidence of how/when/why/to what extent (etc.) a character is or became sexualized

As much as I love it, Samus shouldn't be.

Contemporary Nintendo already does the bulk of the work on that front. smithicide;
I mean they literally made her in a bikini a reward in the first game

that's quite different lol

that was a 5 second still image as a mild fanservice reward for completing the game exceptionally well

meanwhile she's become context-free tits&ass mcgee in recent smash games and other m
I dont think it is much different really. She never had any developed character - she was supposed to be a man through the majority of development. Then they decided it would be cool to reveal the bounty hunter was actually a woman as one of the endings which they immediately took further to strip her down as far as they could with 8 bit graphics lol

sure but again in practice that's basically nothing, intent of the developers be damned lol

samus as a character was just not at all sexualized by the gaming community en masse until brawl, and i will submit irrefutable evidence of such if i must
yeah it's not a lot but it's still cheap sexualization. Like imagine if you beat the original Zelda and your reward was Links clothes fading out until it's a naked guy in a speedo showing off his lon lon milky white thighs. It's weird.

I will say rule 34 and she was although clearly not to the great prevalence that we see today after Nintendo put her into a full body latex suit

No, I know, and I agree to a point. But there's a such thing as fan works that go against character to intentionally depict a creator's own fantasy version of said character. In fact, most porn is at least partly this, and much of it is this way entirely.

Because of this, I chose to say that fan works don't matter.

But I will admit that they do matter to a point.

sure, i can agree with that, but its practical effect on gamers' perception of samus as a sex object was nil lol

and that remained the case with metroid until brawl changed everyth

I will say rule 34

inspired by metroid was basically negligible in quantity until brawl

yeah of course hentai gets fantastical but there are almost always obvious, broad, common themes that are very clearly inspired by the way a character is depicted in their source material

fanworks matter extremely strongly lol
