on my labtob i had no choice but to use an external drive for backups, but with a desktop there's nothing stopping me from just getting a spare internal drive exclusively for that purpose, is there

well, except the argument that a backup is safer the further it is from the main system

some regrets:

• ssd is fantastic but i should have gotten one with at least twice the capacity, micromanaging it to maximize available space is time-consuming and inconvenient and negates all the advantages of having a faster drive in the first place


• should have gotten ram at a minimum frequency of 3000mhz, now if (when) i want to upgrade to 16gb i'll have to buy two brand new 8gb modules and discard my 2400mhz stick which is a perfect waste of $30

but aside from those minor nitpickings it does/plays everything i've asked of it swiftly and painlessly

such an enormous upgrade from my 2011-era apu-based laptop lol

tfw i can finally run skyrim at a stable 900p/24fps

but you could probably either go for a cheaper motherboard or spend the extra ~$20 for an overclockable one and compatible cpu, the 6600k isn't that much more expensive than the 6500

the 1060 and 480 are almost exactly equivalent in power, go with whichever's cheapest or whichever benchmarks highest for your particular games and other needs

there's nothing wrong with that, but you can certainly shave a few bux off your total or increase your total power for the same price by using that guide as a baseline and shopping around

the r9 fury is regularly on sale for $240 after rebate, and it's about 15% superior to the 1060 and 480 (though it only has 4gb of ram compared to 6 and 8gb)

you can probably get a cheaper case

but honestly that's a very solid guide and if you were to just follow it exactly you'd still come out a winner

took a different route and decided that my needs weren't enough to justify those components. instead started with their entry level build and branched off of it. paying a bit more for the case and SSD (250gb smh) and getting fancy with a 1ms monitor. the most intensive things ill be using it for will be overwatch/rocket league and maybe emulating melee to play online

oh also have a friend giving me a few 4gb RAMs so that isnt a cost for me

changed out the CPU for a Pentium since according to reddit it is like 2% slower on benchmarks than the i3 and like 60% cheaper lol tight
