Just joined the PC master race

So what games should I play? I only have a mid-tier PC since I'm still going to play big-title, graphic intensive games on consoles and I didn't want to shell out more than $500 for a computer, but I'm interested in getting into some of the smaller, PC exclusive games that I've been missing out on. So far all I've been playing are Minecraft, Team Fortress 2 and all of the free steam games. I've also been emulating PS2. Any suggestions? Genre doesn't matter.
