Olimar is now confirmed to return in Smash U

Like in Brawl, he seems to use the five Pikmin 2 colors. A Pikmin stage seen in these screenshots resembles Perplexing Pool.

Smash Olimar's suit is changed like the new one that Alph, Brittany, and Charlie use in Pikmin 3, with a slot in the bottom of the helmet and a whistle sticking out.

I'd say the SmashU textures look rather bright and simple, while Brawl was more detailed and perhaps dirty. The Pikmin themselves are brighter than before.

Why use Pikmin 3 characters now when you can save them for Smash 5

Although we haven't seen Olimar in any pre-release information for Pikmin 3, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he has a significant role in Pikmin 3 despite not being one of the initially-available playable characters.

Also, I saw it mentioned somewhere that the new stage looks more like the first Pikmin 3 area than Perplexing Pool. I haven't familiarized myself with Pikmin 3's revealed areas yet.

Correcting myself from that last post:
Apparently, around E3, Nintendo had some Pikmin 3 multiplayer demo in which P1 was Alph and P2 was Olimar. Olimar's appearance in Pikmin 3 does indeed match this SmashU appearance.

But anyway, Smash Bros has so far avoided replacing old characters from a franchise with a new equivalent character like an Olimar->Alph switch would be. The closest to that so far is replacing Mewtwo with Lucario. I also doubt a second Pikmin Captain will be added as an Olimar clone (a la Lucas) because there isn't as much to change.
