Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction is an upcoming PlayStation 3 game, slated for release in Fall 2007. It will be the sixth installment in the Ratchet & Clank series (not including the mobile game) and will be the first PS3 installment. The game is again being developed by Insomniac Games. Its official title was first revealed in the April issue of EGM.[1]

The Ratchet & Clank Future story opens with the shocking discovery that a villain from Ratchet's distant past has tracked him down and wants him dead. This revelation brings up many questions as to Ratchet's origins and launches Ratchet and Clank into a mysterious adventure where they begin to learn about his past, the villain's current evil plans, and a glimpse of the future. The story takes place after the past R&C games. Captain Qwark will also be featuring in this game, working undercover to give Ratchet and Clank clues that help guide them on their journey. Insomniac have also coordinated with High Impact Games (the developers of Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters) to ensure that there were no story conflicts with the PSP game.

The game was first announced at the 2006 Game Developers Conference, where a Ratchet & Clank next-gen tech demonstration was shown for the PlayStation 3. Many new worlds and weapons will be introduced into the game like in previous installments of the series. It will also be more of a platform game, as Insomniac wanted to stop the series from becoming the more weapon based combat game it had become in the previous games Up Your Arsenal and Deadlocked.

Ratchet's sidekick Clank will once again be playable after being unplayable in Ratchet: Deadlocked, and he will have new abilities. Captain Qwark will be the only other returning character from the previous games. His role as a villain or good guy will be somewhat of a mystery, helping the main antagonist, Tachyon, who wants to kill off all lombaxes, yet he is also giving helpful tips to Ratchet and Clank.

Some other details revealed in the article are that the game will go back to its platformer roots after the near complete departure from platforming that Deadlocked took. Also revealed was that the game will answer many questions about Ratchet's origins and the history of the lombaxes that will span over several games. Some new weapons revealed were the Groovitron, a disco ball-like grenade that makes enemies dance to the tune of Staying Alive by the Bee Gees and the Tornado Launcher, which will use the SIXAXIS to allow the player to maneuver a twister that sucks up enemies. Insomniac is going back to their more comedic writing for the series.

As part of a collaboration with ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, you can control a version of James Westbrook, a child from Oklahoma who wanted to become a video game designer but was paralyzed in a car accident. Insomniac stepped in and helped out by putting a fully rendered version of James in the game as a playable character.

As part of Sony's Spring Gamer's Day 2007 event, Ratchet and Clank Future gameplay was shown during a presentation by Insomniac Games. This included showing off some of the new weapons, such as the Pyro Blaster and Fusion Grenade.

The presentation only showed Kerchu, the first planet announced by Insomniac Games. It is a forest area with a large, yellow and silver base invaded by space pirates and their minions. There is a boss at the end of the level, and is fought on foot and on a grind rail. While Brian Allgeier, the creative director of Tools of Destruction, was transporting to another area of the level, a swingshot target could be seen, hinting that the Swingshot or a version of it will be returning.
