what is catan

It's a board game.
The board is made up of a bunch of hexes with different terrain types on them (forests, mountains, quarries, fields and pastures) with ocean surrounding.

Each hex has a random number on top of it (1-12). You begin the game by placing two settlements and two roads on the corners of any particular hex.

At the beginning of each turn, players roll dice. If the number of the rolled dice corresponds to a hex that you have a settlement built on, you get one of the resource (wood, wool, rock, wheat or brick). If it's your turn, you can use the resources you accumulated to build new settlements, cities or roads, or you can buy development cards which help amass an army or give you special bonuses. The goal is to have ten victory points at the end of the game, which are awarded for each city or settlement built.
