In general I want to say panther, but depending on where I see one it could be a mountain lion or a cougar.

Really? Huh, I thought panther would be a more rare answer...

I usually go with mountain lion or cougar, but puma sometimes as well although that's just for sheer variety

Socks

That thing is too fierce to be a puma, a puma is an overgrown cat, not a beast.

Probably mostly thanks to the Florida panther's name, I use panther.

Panthers are also my mother's favorite animal (which means a lot considering she's an incredibly animal-loving person with more pets than I can count and a former zoo employee) and the mascot of my university, yet I've only ever heard the names panther, mountain lion, cougar, and puma of these.

For a second I thought your mother was the mascot of your university, and I thought that was incredibly weird for someone's mother.

couga, isn't that the actual name o fit.

When I think of panthers I only think of black panthers...
I use mountain lion, but cougar is also fine.

Same here...

I guess a cougar could technically have melanism but they haven't found one yet

Samus Aran

Cougar. I will sometimes use "mountain lion" depending upon where I am or who I'm talking with, but generally it'll usually be "cougar."

A Jaguar is the only black cat for me, which is not technically correct because there are other varieties but whatever.
