even in high school, where we had pluses and minuses, 94 was the cutoff for an A so it still would have been an A

It allows for a better GPA calculation.


A = 4.0
A- = 3.7
etc

Thus a 90 only counts for a 3.7 in your GPA. So there is a difference in points between students who get an 89 and an 80.
