When I say "one of my best friends," he's one of two people I would say that about. I'm worrying my dick off guys.

Don't worry. North Korea is all bark, but no bite. My dad has been stationed in South Korea twice, so I know it really isn't that bad. Tell your friend to not drink the cheap Korean booze as it will permanently stain your teeth.
I do not have HIV/AIDS.

Oh, sorry for living in a bubble. Sucks for you. But this isn't the first time the island was attacked in recent history.

These things are kinda common. I think the US embassy will make sure to get him out if it gets to the point of actual combat.

The mainland proper should be fine, even though this attack is somewhat unprecedented. North Korea has always been feared for its artillery pieces, which number in the tens of thousands. With the most impressive underground fortifications of any isolated state, plus a thoroughly indoctrinated populous, it is a hornets nest for any occupational-esque force. Their SOP for Seoul and the like includes pouring fires indiscriminately and allowing their unknown number of 'special forces and 'saboteurs' hiding among the population to go kpow! and wage a fourth generational style gorilla campaign behind enemy lies. Not unlike the likes of Iraq, Somalia, Yemen and our friends south in the crumbling state of Mexico. Point being, even in such a case your friend should be relatively fine, unless he frequents above the 37th parallel.

In a conventional conflict the DPRK would get crushed, but it could not be realistically invaded/occupied. Their initial assault would likely kill tens of thousands, if not more, though it would eventually be repelled.

I don't think so, but he is military personnel so I don't think it would be out of the question to have him report for active duty should things escalate.

This is why I worry.
