I think I have once or twice at the theatre, but that was because they were huge, full, midnight-release shows. I think it's just nice to let the other fans know that you appreciated the movie as much as they did, especially because for midnight releases you get mostly hardcore fans.Like in HP and Pirates.

other than that it's just kinda lame

For some movies in the theaters, if they are exceptionally good (i.e.: Dark Knight)

Why the fuck not do it? It is just a cool and painless thing to do, it kinda connects the crowd and shows everyone that they all really enjoyed the movie. What's the big deal?
