Companies in America spend more resources and effort stifling competition through lobbying and other means rather than researching and developing. Why? It's tried and true way to ensure profits, while R&D is risky.

Look at Elon Musk for example, his companies like Tesla or SpaceX have drastically altered the car and space industry in a very short time. You can see the hurdles Tesla has overcame from old automobile industry titans in their futile attempt to stop his competition.

Crony capitalism is a big reason why a lot of progress is halted.
