I've had my old 10gig 3rd gen ipod laying around for years, and I thing that I should do something with it.
My reason for not using it was because it's battery lasts for about an hour, but I'm considering buying a new battery and installing it, so I can have a nice backup mp3 player. I already have linux running on it and it's boring.

Also is there a version of iTunes that lets me take .mp3 files from a specific folder on my computer and put them on my ipod? I heard there was a recent update that killed that ability or something.

Um not really.
Buy a new battery for ~$10 and you have a fully functional ipod.
They're going for like $70 on ebay the last time i checked.

I have one of those, but the battery is dead. If the battery wasn't dead and I wasn't too lazy to replace it, I would use it as a permanent car iPod, but with the increasing usage of my iPhone's iPod I think my 5.5g will be relegated to that position soon anyway.
