Mac OS X is more stable, prettier, based on Unix, less bloated, faster, less virus prone, and doesn't suck.  akudood;

They make their money on hardware, which is why they  don't do anything to prevent piracy of their OS on a Mac.  baddood;

One's an operating system that only runs on certain hardware, the others an operating system that can run on almost anything.

I personally like certain aspects of both of them and own both a Macbook, and a Windows machine.

OS X is an operating system, but "Mac" usually refers to the hardware itself, as in an iMac of Macbook.
