1st gen. Then they actually looked like real animals, after that they grew sharper edges and just generally started looking manufactored in some made up factory in Jhoto or something. S;

Hard to choose which is better between 1st and 2nd Pokemon, but I like them both better than 3rd or 4th.
However, the old sprites look horrible

I like 1st gen best. I don't like 2nd gen at all, and 4th gen is actually kinda good.
