I don't understand the concept of Valentines day

Yes, I understand the whole I LOVE YOU LETS HAVE SEX part, and the whole i'm sad because nobody loves me today part, but what I don't understand is when you ask people to be your Valentine.
So, are you basically asking to be their lover for one day of their life? Or is it just something cute for boyfriends to ask their girlfriends?
