I love X1 the most out of all the X games, but yeah, I really enjoy all of them up to 5. 6 was okay I guess. 4 was the best PS one of them, by far.

And yes, I quite dislike the Battle Network games. I unfortunately haven't had the chance to play the Legends games though. Should I pick up the 64 version of Legends some time?

I beat 2 in 3 entirely in Japanese, so I wouldn't know if the story is boring since I skipped it all... but the gameplay is intense and awesome. Fairly easy, but I like it.
