Only consoles have region-lock pseudo;
You can play European, Japanese, Chinese, etc. games all on an American computer.
You cannot play European or Japanese Wii/PS3/360/GCN/PS2/Xbox games on an American console (nevermind about PS3, that's region-free)
You can play foreign games on any DS or Gameboy (or PS3)
Not sure about PSP though edumacate;

I import loads of games, so I know all about consoles and handhelds. I'm fairly new to computer gaming, and the best deal on Age of Empires from Amazon is imported from the UK. caterpie;

PlayStation 3 games are region free, Blu-Ray films are region coded.Blu-Ray regions..
PSP games are region free, UMD films and music are region coded like DVDs.
DS is region free.

The rest that she mentioned are region locked.

Actually, I've been wondering the converse. Why are console games region encoded, anyway?

Because the translation companies don't like people who import games edumacate;

It has to do with the publishers of the games.  For example, A game may be published by EA in the United States, but in Japan it might be published by Bandai.    Importing games cuts into the profit of one of the publishers.

Some games are also more expensive in other nations. Richer countries would pay more, thus maximizing the profits of the publisher.    Without that, some one from a richer country, where the games would cost more, would import the games from a poorer nation, where the games are cheaper.

Well, actually, it's just Europe that is different from the rest of the world. Japan and I'm sure the rest of Asia is just the same as us, aside form the languages. caterpie;
