Almost every Pokemon name is made with wordplay.

Bulbasaur: "bulb" is the pre-flower plant form on his back
Ivysaur: "ivy" is a plant...
Venusaur: For this one, I suppose they were leaning toward venus fly-traps

Exact same characters, with new looks, and a few humans who aren't important at all thrown in.In the Megaman X series. They make use of regular Unknowns, technical terms and variables for their names. They let go of that after, though.
