Didn't you say your fan tied too?   That would lead to several components in a system failing due to overheating, including a hard drive which would in turn fail. 


Also, even hard drives have high failure rates--higher than any other component.

uh anything to back it up

uh it's kind of unlikely that hardware with a lack of moving parts will just get up one morning and spontaneously decide to break itself in half
